Learn how to recruit allies in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. This guide covers capturing soldiers, special conditions for unique characters, and the benefits of different soldier careers.

To progress in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, recruiting allies is essential. You must capture enemy soldiers by knocking them out and dragging them to a truck or cardboard box before they wake up. Once captured, they are held in prison on the Squad Management screen. After a few days, they will join your unit, a process sped up by having a Politician in your squad.

Special conditions apply for recruiting unique characters, and rescued soldiers join immediately. Certain characters like Jonathan, Para-Medic, Python, Raikov, Sigint, Sokolov, Eva, Venus, Teliko, and Gene (EU version) will join instantly upon capture or rescue. Soldiers can also be recruited through AP Scan, passwords (though generally not recommended except for specific cases like the GAKO soldier or Zero if the Digital Graphic Novel is unavailable), or voluntarily through Cyber-Survival.

Each soldier has a career that affects their abilities and the best unit to place them in:

• Athlete, Quarterback, Scout, Rescuer, Deliveryman, Bait: Best for the Infiltration Unit.
• Artist, Stuntman: Best for the Online Unit.
• Gambler: Best for Cyber-Survival.
• Surveyor, Spy/Agent, Arms Dealer: Best for the Intelligence Unit.
• Arms Specialist, Elite engineer, Engineer: Best for the Technical Unit.
• Chemist, Doctor, Nutritionist: Best for the Medical Unit.
• Politician: Can be placed in ANY UNIT to speed up prisoner recruitment.

Cyber-Survival mode, accessible via WLAN, allows you to send your units on missions with different rules. Success depends on assigning equipment and checking unit conditions after 12 hours. Be cautious, as lost soldiers can be captured by the enemy. Some soldiers may join voluntarily in Cyber-Survival, sometimes offering gifts like Stealth Camouflage, but it's not advisable to send your favorite soldiers into this mode due to the risk of capture.
