Discover the 'Longest Night' and 'Lost Constellation' modes in Night in the Woods, plus view concept art. Learn how to play these bonus features.

The Extras Menu is found on the title screen of the game. There are three options to select here: "Play Longest Night", "Play Lost Constellation" and "View Concept Art". A brief description of all three of these extra modes is included below.

Longest Night

Longest Night was released shortly after the game was funded via Kickstarter. It was meant to serve as a brief introduction to the characters and included some minor gameplay elements, mostly just to show the backers that yes, they were working on something and no, this wasn't an elaborate scam to steal your money. We see here the personalities of the four main characters, and it hints at the internal struggle Mae deals with during Night In The Woods. All in all, its a nice little introduction and is something you can play either before or after completing the game.

This is a fairly simple game, and you need to move the cursors over the various stars. They will make a noise, and you want to link the similar sounding ones together. So there might be several that make a beep, and all of these go together, and there are others that make a horn noise and all of these go together. It isn't always clear which order they go in and there can be up to six or seven, so start by linking the ones that are closest together. You'll know you finished a pattern because the actual picture will pop up and you'll get some history on the constellation. If you are having a hard time on one of the constellations, just start linking all possible combinations together. The paths will never cross any other path, so that should help eliminate some options. Eventually, you'll get a full nigh sky and you'll get a brief ending scene that just sort of teases what's going on in the main game.

Lost Constellation

Like Longest Night, Lost Constellation was another teaser put together by the developers during the development cycle. This was put together over a five week span in 2014, and again was away for the developers to explore some ideas and themes they wanted to include in the final game. Plus it was a nice little bonus for the backers who were waiting for the full game to be released.

This is a story within a story type of deal, and it starts off with Mae's grandfather telling a younger Mae a bedtime story for the Longest Night. The story he tells you is some folklore created specifically for the Night In The Woods, and a lot of it might sounds vaguely familiar to you if you found all the Dusk Stars. You play as Astra, who was one of the constellations herself, and some other parts of this story also were referenced in the main game briefly. Adina Astra is searching for the frozen lake, but to get to it she's going to have to get through a dangerous forest and confront the forest god herself.

Go to the right, and the game will show you how to collect snowballs. You can continue to the right past this if you want, but there will be a thick fog you can't quite get through. Instead, return to where the game shows you how to make a snowball, and above it you will see eight hanging red totems. Hit each one of them with a snowball, and a little song will play. The game doesn't tell you this, but you can aim where you throw your snowballs by pointing the analog stick in the direction you want the snowball to go (so, for example, if you point it straight up you will throw the snowball straight up). After the song plays, go back to the right and the fog will be cleared.

Continue on to the right and you'll meet two people who are very pessimistic about your chances. There is a cat in a tree that tells you that you'll die here tonight, and a wolf in a house that tries to sell you a coffin since he knows you'll die in these woods. Rude, the both of you.

When you come up to a dancing mouse, tell him you want to pray at the totem. Any option you choose will be wrong at first, and he'll tell you to come back when you've gained knowledge. Continue to the right and you'll come to a patch of snow that has some pink glowing things around it. We can build a snowman here. Throw a snowball up at the trees on either side, aiming for the pink glowing patch of snow there too. When it falls, push it towards the middle and the hit the grab icon when it comes up to put the ball in place. After doing each of these, you can build your snowman by adding whatever you want to it from the little screen that pops up. Grab a piece and move it to the snowman to place it where you want, and click the snowman icon in the top left when you're done. This snowman isn't too please with how you made it and will just keep shouting "WHAT AM I?" A work of art, duh.

Time to try this again. Slightly to the right you'll see what looks like a piece to a Ouija Board. Knock it out of the tree with a snowball, and then go right. The forest loops around at this point, so if you go far enough to the right you'll pass the mouse, the house, and then the patch of ground where you can build the snowman again. Put him together again, but this time place the Ouija Board piece on him as well. This time he'll help you, as he knows what to say to please the forrest god and move on from this repeating nightmare. After you talk to him, go to the right and knock the musical instrument out of the tree. Pick it up and go right until you get back to the shrine with the mouse.

Except the mouse is gone. That cat is here now and he swears the mouse just left, honest. Suuuuuuuure. Repeat the following lines: "In their wings, in their trees", "All things die, be at peace!", "Cease all care, they are coming.", "God of the forest, carry us." That cat will congratulate you, and you'll finally be able to move on.

Go to the left, and when you reach the edge of the cliff, throw a snowball across the gap to hit the red bird bell. This will summon a blind guard, who will not let you in until you prove you are an empress. Ugh. To the right are three different trees that have that special glittering snow on it. Knock
