Learn the controls for Squadron 42 craft like the X-wing, A-wing, and Y-wing, including special maneuvers and weapon linking.
X-wing
The X-wing is the standard fighter for Rogue Squadron, capable of flips and barrel rolls. You can open its quad wings (S-foils) for increased maneuverability, but this reduces speed and prevents firing. When wings are closed, speed increases. The X-wing has four laser cannons that can be linked to fire 2 or 4 shots at once, slowing the fire rate but increasing damage. It carries 6 proton torpedoes and has strong shields. An R2 unit will gradually replenish your health. To do a roll, hold R and left or right. To flip, hold up on the control stick.
A-wing
The A-wing is the fastest ship in the Rebel fleet, but its shields are weaker than the X-wing's. You must rely on speed to evade attacks. Its blasters are formidable and accurate. The A-wing can execute rolls and flips like the X-wing, but has less control and cannot be slowed sufficiently, often requiring multiple strafing runs. It can carry 8 concussion missiles, effective against stationary targets.
Airspeeder
The Airspeeder is a modified civilian repulsor craft (not a true flight craft) equipped with large guns and a harpoon/tow cable. It has no shields but its armament offers some protection. You can skim the ground without crashing on level surfaces, which is advantageous for tasks like roping AT-Ats. This craft cannot perform rolls or other advanced acrobatics. Its brakes operate individually, providing greater control over speed and tighter turns.
Y-wing
The Y-wing is a slow but strong craft that supported the Rebels before the X-wing. It is only flown in 2 stages. It boasts exceptional shields and can carry up to 20 bombs, effective against Imperial artillery and buildings. The Y-wing also has a top-side ion cannon. It can perform rolls and flips like the X-wing, but its lack of speed is a significant drawback, making it feel comparable to riding in a sandcrawler.
V-wing
The V-wing is a new Rebel Alliance craft, nearly as fast as the A-wing, and faster when using its scram jets. These boosters provide a large speed increase over a short distance, followed by a refractory period where the craft moves slowly until thrusters recharge. Like the Airspeeder, the V-wing is a repulsor craft that hugs the ground and cannot perform rolls or flips. Pressing Z or R while turning makes the ship turn sharper. Its blaster cannons are initially flimsy and inaccurate, but can be improved by switching to rapid fire mode, though you must fire in short bursts to avoid overheating. It features unique cluster missiles, good for hitting groups of enemies or inflicting heavier damage on a single target.
- Linking X-wing blasters slows fire rate but increases damage.
- The X-wing's R2 unit gradually replenishes health.
- A-wing speed is crucial for evading attacks due to weaker shields.
- Airspeeder's individual brakes offer precise control for tighter turns.
- Y-wing bombs are devastating against artillery and buildings.
- V-wing scram jets offer a temporary speed boost, but require a recharge period.
