Super Mario Bros. 3 Water Land walkthrough: navigate levels, find Toad Houses with Frog Suits, and defeat Boss Bass.
Walkthrough
- 1Understand the map key: S (Start), X (Level), P (Pipe), F (Fortress), R (Rock), H (Spade House), T (Toad House), W (Wandering Hammer Brothers), L (Locked Door), C (Castle), B (Bridge), N (Canoe).
- 2Locate Toad Houses (T) for items: House #1 has a pre-determined Frog Suit. Houses #2, #3, #4, and #5 offer random items including Fire Flowers, Raccoon Leaves, Frog Suits, and Super Mushrooms.
- 3Encounter Wandering Hammer Brothers (W) who may fight on land or with water interference for Regular Mario. Brother Set #1 uses Hammers, and Brother Set #2 uses Invincible Starman.
- 4Level 3-1: Start by hugging the left to find a power-up before proceeding right. Past air pipes and a Blooper, choose a path. Option One: Swim to the top of a wooden block wall, go over it, and find a power-up in a cubby hole. Option Two: Head down the right corridor, swim past a pipe, Lava Lotus, and another pipe, collect coins, and get a power-up from a ? Block. Rejoin by heading right along the water, passing Bloopers, to a pipe by a wooden block wall leading to the exit. For extra coins and a 1-Up, go down through floor holes, fend off a Lava Lotus, navigate Note Blocks, and head up to the exit pipe. Hit the Slot Box to finish.
- 5Level 3-2: Jump across lifts, fall to a Donut Block, and collect a power-up. Position on the left of the next lift, run and jump to a Wooden Block platform above to dislodge an Invincible Starman, then grab it. Hit the second ? Block (preferably on the left) for another Invincible Starman, followed by a third ? Block with an Invincible Starman on a two Donut Block ledge. Take the next lift right, dodging Cheep-Cheeps. Hit the third block from the left to reveal a P-Switch. Activating the P-Switch creates a ledge near a pipe with a Venus Fire Trap for easier access, though jumping directly to the pipe is possible. After coming through the pipe, avoid a Cheep-Cheep and hit the Slot Box. Raccoon Mario can fly up to find seven Coins and a 1-Up.
- 6Level 3-3: This level features rising and lowering water. Avoid Boss Bass, which can swallow even Super Mario, and Cheep-Cheeps. Go right to a Note Block containing a power-up. If it's a Super Mushroom, stomp a Green Koopa Troopa, kick its shell to break bricks, and get the mushroom. Aiming the shell left in the depression to the right of the power-up reveals a P-Switch for collecting coins from changed bricks. Jump across two gaps, then to a tall, skinny platform. Wait for the rotor platform to stabilize to use it as a stepping stone.
Tips
- In Level 3-1, taking Option One provides a power-up and skips most of the level.
- In Level 3-2, hitting the P-Switch can make reaching the pipe with the Venus Fire Trap easier, but direct jumps are also possible.
- In Level 3-3, be aware that Boss Bass can swallow you whole, regardless of your power-up status.
- If you are Raccoon Mario in Level 3-2, you can fly up after the pipe to find a 1-Up and seven Coins.
