The Crew 2 offers various activities for players to engage in, ranging from events to skills. Each event is tailored to a specific discipline and requires vehicles of that type, while skills are more loosely connected and can be completed with vehicles from other families or disciplines.

Players can explore the United States freely in FreeDrive mode. During this exploration, various activities like events and skills can be activated. By performing different styles of driving and flying, players earn followers which contribute to their status level. These followers are banked once the player's score gain ends without interruption. LIVE crates are scattered across the map, awarding players with performance parts based on the rarity of the box found.

The LIVE Summit is a Player vs. Environment (PvE) mode introduced on April 24th, 2019. Participants have a chance to win tiered prizes based on their leaderboard positions, which are separated by platform (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Stadia).

There are four main Motorsport Families, each with a unique racing style theme and four specialized vehicle disciplines. Each family has a headquarters. The Freestyle family includes Aerobatics, Demolition Derby, Jetsprint, and Monster Truck disciplines, with main rivals Sofia Valentina Herrera and Emmett Lee Parker assisting the player. The Off-Road family's main rival is Tucker "Tuck" Morgan.
