Unlocking the Mutation System

To gain access to Mutations, you must first complete the side quest "Turn and Face the Strange". This quest becomes available early in the Blood and Wine storyline, shortly after arriving in Toussaint and completing the main quest "The Beast of Toussaint".

  1. Initiating the Quest: After "The Beast of Toussaint," you'll receive a letter from Yennefer (or Triss, depending on your choices in the main game) instructing you to investigate a Witcher's laboratory.
  2. Locating the Laboratory: The quest marker will lead you to Professor Moreau's abandoned laboratory, hidden beneath the ruins of a castle in the northern part of Toussaint.
  3. Navigating the Lab: The laboratory is a small dungeon with a few minor enemies. Follow the linear path, solving simple environmental puzzles (e.g., activating levers, using Aard to clear rubble).
  4. Discovering Moreau's Research: At the end of the lab, you'll find Professor Moreau's notes and equipment. Interacting with these items will trigger a cutscene and unlock the Mutation system on your character panel.

Upon completion, you'll also receive your first Mutagen, allowing you to activate your first Mutation.

How Mutations Work

Mutations are accessed via a new tab in your character menu. Each Mutation requires a specific combination of Greater Mutagens (Red, Blue, Green) and a certain number of Ability Points to unlock. Once unlocked, a Mutation can be activated, replacing your standard skill tree slots with a dedicated Mutation slot and four additional linked skill slots.

  • Activation Cost: Each Mutation has a unique cost in Greater Mutagens and Ability Points. For example, Euphoria requires 2 Greater Red Mutagens, 1 Greater Green Mutagen, and 8 Ability Points.
  • Linked Skill Slots: When a Mutation is active, it provides four additional skill slots. Any skills placed in these slots gain a bonus based on the active Mutation. This allows for powerful synergies between your chosen Mutation and your regular abilities.
  • Switching Mutations: You can switch between unlocked Mutations at any time outside of combat. There is no cost to switch, allowing you to adapt your build to different encounters.

Recommended Early Mutations

Choosing your first Mutation can be daunting. Here are a few strong contenders for early game effectiveness:

  • Euphoria:
    • Effect: Increases sword damage and Sign intensity by 0.75% for every point of Toxicity. This is incredibly powerful for alchemy builds, as high toxicity levels become a massive damage buff.
    • Requirements: 2 Greater Red Mutagens, 1 Greater Green Mutagen, 8 Ability Points.
    • Strategy: Combine with skills like Heightened Tolerance, Acquired Tolerance, and Synergy to maximize toxicity and mutagen bonuses. Consuming multiple decoctions and potions will turn Geralt into a damage-dealing machine.
  • Bloodbath:
    • Effect: Each successful sword strike increases attack power by 5% for the remainder of the fight. This bonus stacks up to 250% and also grants immunity to critical effects.
    • Requirements: 3 Greater Red Mutagens, 8 Ability Points.
    • Strategy: Ideal for pure combat builds. Focus on fast attacks and maintaining your combo. Skills like Muscle Memory, Precise Blows, and Rage Management complement this Mutation well.
  • Metamorphosis:
    • Effect: Critical hits with Signs or swords randomly activate a decoction effect for 120 seconds without increasing Toxicity. Up to 5 decoctions can be active this way.
    • Requirements: 1 Greater Red Mutagen, 1 Greater Blue Mutagen, 1 Greater Green Mutagen, 8 Ability Points.
    • Strategy: A versatile Mutation that benefits all playstyles. Ensure you have a good selection of decoctions in your inventory to get the most out of this. Skills that increase critical hit chance (e.g., Crippling Strikes, Exploding Shield) are highly effective.

Acquiring Greater Mutagens

Greater Mutagens are essential for unlocking and upgrading Mutations. They are primarily obtained through:

  • Monster Drops: Stronger monsters, especially those found in Toussaint and higher-level areas, have a chance to drop Greater Mutagens. Focus on clearing monster nests and hunting down contracts.
  • Crafting: You can craft Greater Mutagens from lesser Mutagens at an alchemist. For example, 3 Red Mutagens combine into 1 Greater Red Mutagen. This is often the most reliable method. Visit an alchemist in Beauclair, such as the one near the main market square.
  • Specific Quests: A few quests might reward you with Greater Mutagens, but this is less common.

Remember to regularly check your inventory and craft Greater Mutagens as soon as you have enough regular Mutagens to do so. This will ensure you're ready to unlock new Mutations as you gain Ability Points.
