Obstacles

Learn how to overcome various obstacles in Tomb Raider: Anniversary, including ledges, poles, ropes, rings, columns, and perchable columns. Master Lara's movements.

This section details the various obstacles Lara Croft will encounter in Tomb Raider: Anniversary and how to navigate them. These include ledges, poles, ropes, rings, columns, and perchable columns.

Ledges (or Crevices)

  1. Lara can grab ledges or crevices by jumping or falling toward them while holding R2 (if safety grab is disabled).
  2. Shimmy along ledges or crevices by moving the left analog stick in the desired direction. Tap the /utton while moving to increase Lara's speed.
  3. Press the O button to release your grip on a ledge or crevice.
  4. To jump away from a ledge or crevice, hold down on the left analog stick and press X. To jump to the side, hold the direction of the ledge's end and press X. To jump straight up to a higher obstacle, press X without tapping a direction.

Poles

  1. Lara can grab onto a pole by jumping or falling toward it while holding R2 (if safety grab is disabled).
  2. Use the left analog stick while hanging to position Lara along the pole.
  3. Push the analog stick in the direction Lara is facing to make her swing. Tap the opposite direction to turn Lara around.
  4. Press the X button to jump while swinging, or press the O button to drop from the pole.
  5. Hold the opposite direction while swinging to perform a quick turn in midair.

Ropes

  1. Jump toward a rope, and Lara will grab it in midair.
  2. Hold the /utton and move the analog stick up or down to climb or descend the rope, respectively. Move the analog stick left or right to adjust Lara's facing direction.
  3. Swing on the rope by pressing up and down on the analog stick. Press X once enough momentum is built to jump to a destination.

Rings

  • Ceiling Rings: Press the [] button while jumping below a ceiling ring to grapple to it. Lara can swing from these like ropes.
  • Wall Rings: Press the [] button while jumping below a wall ring to grapple to it. Lara will run back and forth along the wall.
    • Continue running back and forth by pressing up or down on the left analog stick. Press X to jump to a destination when Lara swings in that direction. Sometimes, holding the direction of the destination and tapping X is required for the jump.
    • To stop and remain suspended with feet on the wall, hold the opposite direction Lara is running. Hold the /utton and move the analog stick up or down to climb or lower yourself while on the grapple. Tap X to jump away from the wall.

Columns

  1. Jump toward a slender column, and Lara will grab and wrap around it.
  2. Move the left analog stick up or down to climb or descend the column.
  3. Press X along with the direction of Lara's destination to jump in that direction. Press X without a direction to jump away from the column (to her back).

Perchable Columns

  1. Jump toward a slender column with a flat top to land and perch on it, maintaining balance. Press the /utton if Lara starts to lose her balance.
  2. Press the X button in the direction of Lara's destination to jump from her perched position.

Lara's Moves

Learn Lara's advanced moves in Tomb Raider: Anniversary, including the Adrenaline Dodge, Wall Run, Somersault, and Dive.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
    Adrenaline Dodge

While firing at a locked-on target (hold L1 to lock on), if the enemy becomes enraged (flash followed by a sudden dash), wait until the screen blurs while the enemy approaches Lara then press any direction + the dodge button (O) in order to make Lara dodge in the desired direction in slow motion. Keep the auto-targeting activated while dodging and two crosshairs will form over the target while Lara aims in mid-air. The crosshairs will eventually form one crosshair then turn red. Once the crosshair is red, press R1 to fire and score a one-hit kill on all normal enemies. The adrenaline dodge is used quite often to stun bosses so you must become familiar with using this!

  2. 2
    Wall Run

Jump and grapple to any gold rings mounted along the side of a wall and Lara will begin a wall run. Press to the left and right on the left analog to make Lara run then press X to jump. Stop pressing a direction or quickly pull in the opposite direction to have her stop. Hold / then press up or down to have Lara climb up or down the grapple. Press X while standing still on a wall to have Lara jump backward off of the wall.

Warning: When leaping to an area that is across from the wall that Lara is wall running on, press toward the platform (or area) AND press the jump button as soon as Lara is about to turn on the wall. This will make Lara turn toward the platform then kick off the wall with her legs and jump toward the area across from her. The timing must be fairly precise and the platform must be across from Lara, so line her up with it if she isn't already across from it during some portion of the wall run.

  3. 3
    Somersault

Press X twice in succession (once for a jump then again) to make Lara perform a somersault jump.

  4. 4
    Crouching/Dodging

Press and hold the O button to make Lara crouch in order to move under overhead obstacles. Press the O button while holding a direction to have Lara quickly dodge in that direction. Press O about a second after rolling to make Lara spring upward feet first.

  5. 5
    Flips and Spinning Jump

Tap the O button while holding forward on the left analog to make Lara perform a series of forward flips followed by a spinning somersault. Tap the X button during the flips to make Lara perform some different flips and an even higher ending jump.

  6. 6
    Walking

Press and hold the R2 button while moving to make Lara walk. This is helpful in highly dangerous areas and helps with precision when moving.

  7. 7
    Dive

Quickly tap X followed by O to make Lara perform a dive. This move is very helpful when jumping into water since Lara will remain submerged a bit in the pool in stead of floating to the top.

  8. 8
    Special Pull up

Press and hold X while pulling up to make Lara swing her legs onto the platform in order to pull her body up onto the ledge.

Tips
  • The Adrenaline Dodge is crucial for stunning bosses and scoring one-hit kills on normal enemies.
  • Mastering the Wall Run's precise jump timing is key for crossing large gaps.
  • The Dive move is particularly useful for entering water without immediately surfacing.
  • Walking with R2 allows for more precise movements in dangerous situations.
