Tomb Raider II was the first game I bought for my Playstation 1, and it was one of the first games for which I wrote a guide. As time went on, interest in the game (and my guide!) waned, and I found myself moving on to other pursuits. Then the release of the Remastered version of the game spurred renewed interest in the franchise, and the introduction of Trophies gave me a reason to write a new guide.

I think that you will find this guide to be unique. Most Trophy Guides will tell (or show) you _how_ to obtain a Trophy, but a rare few will also show you precisely _when_ to obtain it. By contrast, this guide integrates a traditional walkthrough with a Trophy guide. It will take you through the game from beginning to end, documenting nearly every jump and battle, and then pausing the action at each optimum point for pursuing a Trophy. Hence the description, "Walkthrough and Trophy Guide".

There are 66 Trophies that can be earned in this game. If you follow this guide from the "Lara's Home" prologue to the "Home Sweet Home" epilogue, you will emerge with 61 of the 66 Trophies in a single pass through the game. I'll then walk you step-by-step through 3 of the remaining 5 Trophies. The last 2 Trophies require separate runs through the entire game, so detailed step-by-step descriptions for these would not be practical. Instead, I'll offer some general guidance and resources for earning those last 2 Trophies.

For the record, my previous guide for TR2 (which is still available here on GameFAQs) documents how to complete the game without using any Medi Packs, and many of the strategies embedded in that guide are described here as well. Although the Remastered version of this game does not offer a Trophy for a no-health-pack game, I would argue that those same skills will aid you in earning the Starring One More Time Trophy, which is granted for completing the New Game+ version. So, although some of my battle descriptions might come off as being overly cautious, I hope that you will find them to be ultimately beneficial.

Who This Guide is For

This guide was written primarily for use by those who are playing the Remastered version of the game and are seeking to earn all of the Trophies. At this point in time, I figure this describes the majority of people who are currently playing this game.

If you are playing the Remastered version but don't care about the Trophies, or if you are playing the original PS1 or PC version of the game, then this guide will still work for you, with the following qualifications.

  • In this walkthrough, pistols are the only weapons used. This handicap is put in place in order to earn the Very Hard Boiled Trophy. If Trophies are not an issue for you, feel free to use whatever weapons you have on hand.
  • When the path that leads to a Trophy is not the optimal path for someone for whom Trophies are not an issue, more appropriate directions will be give to this latter group. This will be explained more thoroughly in the next section of this guide.

Quality Control

I want to emphasize to you that everything in the guide _works_. I did not record a battle strategy here until I had fought that battle multiple times in different ways and was convinced that a gamer of average skills could consistently duplicate my success with a minimum number of attempts. I'm not claiming that my strategies are necessarily the "best" or even "easy". I do, however, believe that they are written clearly enough to be understood and followed by just about anyone and that, with a bit of practice, most people will find them to be very effective.

I need to temper that statement with a dollop of reality. I have put a LOT of information into this guide in a very short period of time, trying to get it published so that readers could benefit from it. I caught many errors when I proofread the sections, but I have no delusions that I caught them all. Please be understanding about minor typos and misdirections until I can play through the game using this guide another time or two.

That said, if you have reason to believe that anything in this guide is inaccurate, I hope that you will contact me either by email or through GameFAQs and, as politely as possible, let me know your concern. I am committed to making this guide (and, for that matter, all of my guides) as accurate and helpful as possible, and I would sincerely appreciate your help in making it meet these standards.

Learn Tomb Raider II controls, Photo Mode, and useful button combos. Access menus and change graphics settings.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
To access the Main Menu, press the left side of the touchpad.
  2. 2
Pressing the "Options" button toggles between Classic and Updated graphics.
  3. 3
Simultaneously pressing down on both sticks (L3 + R3) pauses the game and enters Photo Mode.
  4. 4
In Photo Mode, you can virtually move around an area, viewing terrain and locating enemies. Try this early on to get a feel for it, as it can be very useful.
  5. 5
To make Lara draw weapons immediately after picking up an item, hold the Weapons button during the pickup animation. This can work with almost any animation and command button.
  6. 6
To skip a cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically) that immediately follows throwing a switch, stand in front of the switch, press Action, then hold Look during the switch-throwing animation. This does not work for all cutscenes.
Tips
  • The guide uses controller button names (e.g., "Action") instead of symbols.
  • Screenshots may vary in graphics style (Classic or Updated) as the author switched between them.
  • All button sequences are described for traditional "Tank" controls.
  • Special move button combinations are often outlined in the "Lara's House" portion of Tomb Raider II.
  • Directions like "Follow the path to the right" mean there is no other choice.
  • "Turn right" means you have the option to go straight but should take a branch to the right.
  • "Rotate right" means to stand in place and turn 90º clockwise.
  • "Rotate slightly right" means to turn less than 90º clockwise, usually about 45º.
  • "Take a hard right" means to go through an opening and immediately turn right.
  • "Jog right" usually means you will encounter an obstacle going straight, requiring a turn right then immediately left.
  • Screenshot lines indicate actions: straight arrows show running direction, vertical arrows show climbing/dropping, curved arrows show jumping, and curved lines on surfaces show running/swimming along a path.
  • Tomb Raider II uses a stopwatch instead of a compass, so directions are relative to Lara's facing.
  • Lavender text boxes at the start of levels contain notes for New Game + Mode and can be skipped initially.
  • "Trophy Alert" indicates an action towards earning a Trophy; "Trophy Time" indicates earning a Trophy.
  • Always read bullet-pointed step-by-step descriptions.
