Follow this guide to find Walter's room through the basement, solve the music box puzzle, and uncover his tragic story in What Remains of Edith Finch.
Alright, so after Barbara's story wraps up, you'll need to head back into that box you came from. Crawl through the passage again, but this time, about halfway through, look to your right. You'll see some doors you need to unlatch – just use the hand icon with R2 and the stick. Head through those doors and down the stairs. Keep going down the corridor, away from the front door, and you should spot a music box on a shelf to your right. Just keep turning that handle until it pops open the door to the basement.
Once you're in the basement, move past the first couple of rooms. You'll want to turn right. There's an opening there, and if you look closely, you might see some small windows way off in the distance. It can get pretty dark in here, so just move forward a few steps and then turn right again – it's the only path available. At the end of this short corridor, you'll find a fridge. Grab it with R1 and push the left stick to the left to open it up.
Inside the fridge, look down low for a hand icon. Use that to open up another corridor. At the end of this one, you'll find some curtains. Pull them aside for a bit of extra detail, and then check the shelf on the right side of the room. That's where Walter's shrine is! You'll see an R2 prompt to open up his story.
When you get to the can opener, you'll need to use it by holding R1 and then moving the right or left stick in a circle to turn the key. Keep at it until things start to change. You'll then see a trapdoor on the floor with some writing on it. Go over to it, use the hand icon with R1/R2 and the stick to grab and lift it open. Head down into the new area and walk towards the stone wall. Pick up the hammer you find there and just walk forward when you're able to.
Transition - Walter's room to Sam's room.
Once Walter's story is finished and you're back in control, just lift that trapdoor again. You'll need to follow the exact same route Walter took. Go through the hole in the wall and keep following the track.
