This section of the guide covers the core elements and features of Diablo III, designed to help less experienced players understand the game's mechanics and unfamiliar gameplay aspects. It is an important part of the guide for those new to the game.

Chapter III: Game Basics aims to explain all important aspects of Diablo III. If you are still learning the game, this chapter is a great resource. As Diablo 3 is an Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG), it may not be familiar territory for the average gamer, so it's recommended to read through rather than assume you'll figure everything out.

(01) Getting Around

Movement in Diablo 3 is done by clicking on the ground. Your hero will move to the clicked location if it's reachable, regardless of obstacles. There is no sprinting or jumping; movement speed is constant unless affected by items that grant +% movement speed bonuses.

Accidentally clicking on an enemy instead of a location can be problematic, especially for ranged classes. To avoid this, ranged players can hold Shift while clicking to cast abilities on the spot. A universal solution is to bind the 'Move' option in the keybinding menu, which allows your hero to move to a location even when the cursor is over an enemy.

(02) Combat

Diablo 3's combat is easy to learn but difficult to master, offering both relaxing and exciting experiences. To attack an enemy, simply click on them, which uses the ability assigned to the left mouse button. Abilities bound to the right mouse button can be used similarly.

Unlike previous Diablo games where only the mouse buttons were used for attacks, Diablo 3 allows you to assign four additional active abilities to the number keys (1-4 by default). These abilities are cast when the key is pressed, or when pressed while the cursor is over an enemy, depending on the ability's configuration.

Combat involves fighting large groups of enemies with relatively low health, leading to a fast pace. You will encounter stronger enemies and different enemy ranks that require varied approaches. Boss fights are frequent and rewarding.

Due to the fast combat pacing, quick decision-making and fast reflexes are crucial for survival and success. You will be killing hordes of enemies quickly, and you may die just as fast.

(03) Abilities

Diablo 3 features a wide array of interesting abilities for each of its 5 classes, offering more variety than most ARPGs. Each character has approximately 25 active abilities and 13-16 passive abilities, with each active ability having 5 associated runes.
