Alright, so you've gotten into your first battle in Final Fantasy II, and the music is kicking in! Before you start mashing buttons, let's take a look at what's actually going on the screen. It might look a little busy at first, but it's pretty straightforward once you know what everything means.

Think of the battle screen like this: at the very top, you've got the Battle Message area [1]. This is where the game will give you little hints or tell you what's happening, like if someone's about to get hit or if an attack missed. Below that is just the Background [2] – nothing to worry about there, it's just scenery.

Then you've got the stars of the show: the Bad Guys [3]! These are the enemies you need to defeat. The game will show you their names and how many of them there are in the Enemy Names section [4]. On the flip side, you have your own crew, the Teammates [5]. This is where you'll see your party members, and you'll use them to take down those baddies.

Underneath your party members, you'll see some key stats: Current HP [6] shows how much health each character has right now. Max HP [7] is their total health, so you know how much damage they can take. And Current MP [8] is your magic points, which you'll need to cast spells. Keep an eye on these numbers, especially HP, so you know when to heal up!

Now for the important part: what can you actually *do* in battle? You've got a few main options:
