Smelting and forging represent the next critical step in Hytale's crafting progression, moving beyond the basic Crafting Table to unlock the potential of raw ores and metals. As an expansive sandbox survival game, Hytale encourages exploration through escalating tiers of enemies and crafting materials, and these processes are vital for creating the stronger tools, weapons, and armor needed to face tougher challenges.

The primary station for smelting is the Furnace. To craft a Furnace, players typically need 8 Cobblestone, which can be obtained by mining Stone with a pickaxe. Once built, the Furnace requires two types of input: fuel and ore. Common fuels include Wood, Coal, or Charcoal. Players place the fuel in the top-left slot and the raw ore (such as Copper Ore or Iron Ore) in the slot above the fuel. The Furnace then consumes the fuel to heat up and transform the ore into ingots. For example, smelting 1 Copper Ore in a Furnace with sufficient fuel will yield 1 Copper Ingot. This process is fundamental for acquiring the materials needed for early-to-mid game gear.

As players venture into more dangerous biomes like the Devastated Lands or the Whisperfrost Frontiers, they will encounter rarer ores that require more advanced processing. This is where the Forge comes into play. While the exact recipe for the Forge may vary or be unlocked through progression, it typically allows for the smelting of higher-tier ores, such as Iron Ore and potentially rarer metals like Titanite. The Forge often operates with similar principles to the Furnace but may require more potent fuels or have faster smelting times. It is essential for crafting items like the Iron Sword, Iron Armor, and eventually, more powerful weapons and tools that utilize materials found in later game areas.
