John Donovan teaches you how to wiretap junction boxes throughout the city in Mafia III. Wiretapping offers several advantages:

1. Wiretapping fills out the map in an area, marking all collectibles and stores. While collectibles are not required for any trophies and may not be essential for gameplay, they can be visually interesting. Stores are marked, which may be helpful if you are looking for places to rob, though this is considered minor thuggery.
2. In wiretapped areas, enemies will always appear on your minimap (radar) and through walls when using combat sense. Without wiretapping, enemies only appear if you can physically see or hear them, or already know their location. Later upgrades from Vito and Burke allow you to see enemy mobsters and police, respectively, without needing to wiretap first, making wiretaps less critical.
3. If you have wiretapped an area, you can use gathered information (dirt) to convince enemy racket bosses to switch sides and work for you. If you have not wiretapped, your only option is to kill them. Killing a boss yields a small cash bonus immediately, while recruiting them provides a bonus to the racket's starting income. While rackets can be upgraded to their maximum income through side missions, recruiting offers a choice and contributes to achievements related to recruiting or killing bosses and informants.
4. Certain missions will only appear on the map if the area has been wiretapped. These are typically minor missions with one or two enemies, but their scope and rewards vary by area.

Interrogating an informant in an area reveals all junction boxes for that district. Donovan often provides junction box locations during intel briefings.
