This guide covers the SEMTEX CONTROL UNITS section in the Engine Room, Port area of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
- 11st Control Unit: Climb the left large block for a better view. Aim carefully with the USP and shoot the unit behind the Semtex.
- 22nd Control Unit: Jump down, move past the first sensors. Crouch and look right to find the unit. Shoot it and move past the second sensor panels.
- 33rd Control Unit: Stay far right. The unit is ahead and to the left, on top of the Semtex, partially hidden by the left wall block. Shoot it to deactivate it.
After deactivating the last sensors, open the door to proceed.
Deck-2, Port
As you hear an announcement, dart ahead. Grab the RATION in the first right opening. Find USP BULLET X 15 by a dead worker in the next opening.
Continue forward and take out the guard in the distance before getting too close. Proceed to the corner ahead.
A guard with headphones will appear from the right. Take him out once he stops. Note the USP BULLET X 15 by the left wall.
Head right for more USP BULLET X 15 near some pipes. Ahead, you'll encounter a sleepy guard. You can take him out, but it might raise suspicion if you linger. Watch his patterns as he may wake up.
Past the sleepy guard, find more USP BULLET X 15 by the end door. Leave the area.
Deck-2, Starboard
Find more USP BULLET X 15 near the door and M9 BULLET X 15 behind the pipes (lean and shimmy to reach them). In the next opening, find a RATION and more USP BULLET X 15 behind the pipes.
A cutscene will play after the next opening.
Several guards will prevent access to the holds. You will enter Alert Mode. You can use the USP (lethal) or M9 (non-lethal). The M9 is better for ranking but harder to use; the USP is easier as the slide doesn't lock.
Start crouched behind a box, run to the next box. Do not try to run past the first box, as an invisible barrier will stop you.
Peek from behind the box and shoot visible guards. Aim for the head of the guard behind the box ahead. Shoot guards hiding behind corners as they stand up.
Guards may start turning off lights, but this is manageable, especially if you have Thermal Goggles.
After defeating the initial guards, more will rush your position. If using the M9, retreat to gain distance and use Stun Grenades. After defeating them, a cutscene will play.
CARGO HOLDS
Otacon will contact you. You need to photograph Metal Gear RAY four times during the commandant's speech within a seven-minute timer. Any suspicious actions will result in Game Over.
You can find M9 BULLET X 15 on a lower ledge by shimmying along a black rope from the top ledge, but this requires a high grip level.
Alternatively, jump on the railing one floor down and shimmy left for a different route, also requiring a high grip level.
This walkthrough follows the simplest route: moving down to the main floor.
Once on the main floor, take the left route, ducking and crawling under the projector light to avoid detection. The Marine near the projector can be ignored if you crawl behind him.
A hatch in the back left corner offers an alternative route, but staying on the upper level is recommended. You can climb a ladder here to get the M9 ammo mentioned earlier.
Head north, being cautious of the guard ahead and the noisy metallic grate. Avoid running over the grate, as it will alert the guard and cause mission failure. Be mindful of these grates throughout the area. Walk quietly over them.
