Bricks, pipes, and doors are the main field items in Paper Mario. This guide explains how to use and interact with each of them.

Doors: Walk up to a door and press UP on the D-pad to go through it. The direction may change in 3-D mode.

Pipes: These are green, red, or blue pipes. Jump on top of a pipe and press DOWN on the D-pad to use it. Not all pipes are usable, and Piranha Plants may hide inside them.

Bricks (Blocks): There are 5 types of bricks:

  • Sand Blocks: Brown blocks that look like bricks. They can be destroyed by Boomer or by hitting them from underneath. They may contain hidden items.
  • Item Blocks: Yellow blocks with a question mark. These permanent blocks always contain an item, retrievable by jumping into them from underneath or by using Boomer on top.
  • Brown Blocks: Indestructible blocks marked with an X. They do not hold items.
  • Dimensional Blocks: Yellow blocks with two arrows. They only appear in one dimension at a time. To use them, you must be in the same dimension. If a dimensional block is in the wrong dimension, you can flip to its dimension and jump into it to change its dimension.
  • ! Blocks: Special blocks of various sizes and colors that perform a special task when hit, such as opening a door, moving a pipe, or making a chest appear. Some ! blocks can only be hit once, while others are permanent.
