Learn how to use amiibo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including training Figure Players, using 'Send on a Journey,' 'Smash,' and 'Level Up' modes for optimal results.

amiibo are figurines and accessories that interact with compatible games via near-field communication (NFC). In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you can hold an amiibo to the right Joy-Con joystick or Pro Controller to unlock content or store data. Access amiibo features by navigating to Games & More → amiibo.

Figure Player (FP)

If your amiibo represents a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it can become a Figure Player (FP). You can battle your FP or challenge other FPs. amiibo from other collections, like the Super Mario Collection, or even older systems like the Nintendo Wii U, can be used. A new FP starts with low skill and learns through experience via 'Send on a Journey,' 'Smash,' or 'Level Up.'

Send on a Journey

Requires version 3.1.0 or above. Access this mode via Games & More → amiibo → Send on a Journey. Your FP will battle other users' FPs online in 3 rounds, with changing rules and opponents each round. Rewards include SP. Milestones can be earned for placing first, winning 10 times, or winning all three rounds in a single journey. This mode helps train your FP, but it's recommended to train offline first, as FPs typically lose initially and are limited to one journey per day.

Milestone
The amiibo you sent on a journey placed first for the first time!
The amiibo you sent on a journey won 10 times!
The amiibo you sent on a journey won all three times in one journey!

Smash

To speed up training, you can have a level 9 CPU version of the amiibo teach your FP. Do this in the Smash option from the amiibo menu or by selecting CPU/P2 on the fighter select screen in a normal Smash mode and scanning the amiibo. Recommended rules for training include Stamina: 150, Stock: 2, Time Limit: 5:00, Spirits: Off. Train until the FP reaches level 30. If you are proficient with the fighter, you can also battle your FP directly to improve its skills. After this, proceed to 'Level Up.'

Level Up

Use spare spirits to increase your FP's level to 50 and adjust its attack, defense, skills, type, and personality. FPs can inherit a type from a primary spirit, which offers advantages or disadvantages based on matchups: Grab Type (Green) beats Shield Type (Blue), Shield Type (Blue) beats Attack Type (Red), and Attack Type (Red) beats Grab Type (Green). Purple is the Neutral type with no strengths or weaknesses. Initially, FPs are Neutral. Inheriting a spirit of a different type changes the FP's type, indicated by a yellow glow around the FP's type icon. Changing types later requires matching the number of primary spirits already assigned. Support spirits grant unique skills. FPs have 3 slots for support skills. Personalities, learned from spirits or battles, affect playstyle (e.g., 'Show-Off' taunts frequently). FPs can develop bad habits; to reset, go to 'Customize' and press L + R + X to reset level and strategy. To prevent changes, turn 'Learn' off in 'Customize.' Once trained, return to 'Send on a Journey' for advanced training against other FPs.
