Master Team Fortress Classic Soldier rockets, Medic poison, and Heavy Weapons Guy tactics. Learn essential strategies for each class.

Soldier General Strategies

The Soldier's effectiveness hinges on mastering the Rocket Launcher. When entering open areas, fire rockets at common sniper hideouts, as slow-moving Soldiers are easy targets for Snipers. Most Snipers will stop aiming and run when a rocket approaches. Continue this until you reach a safe area. While bunny hopping can help avoid sniper shots, the rocket method is less painful.

For fast opponents with low armor, switch to your Super-Shotgun. Use the Super-Shotgun if you are low on health and cannot afford collateral damage, unless you intend to use the Rocket Launcher to take enemies down with you. In most situations, the Rocket Launcher is the preferred weapon.

A useful fighting technique is to jump while using the Rocket Launcher to minimize self-damage. This is an essential skill to master.

As a Soldier, always keep moving. Run, strafe, and jump to avoid becoming an easy target, which will help you survive longer.

To turn battles in your favor, prime a grenade while firing rockets and jumping. The extra grenade damage can make the difference. This is a somewhat advanced technique.

Soldier Tips:

  • Aim at the enemies' feet when firing rockets.
  • Always keep mobile when fighting.
  • Use your Super-Shotgun against fast opponents with low armor or when low on health.
  • Jump while using the Rocket Launcher to minimize damage to yourself.
  • Prime a grenade while firing rockets and jumping for extra damage.

Medic General Strategies

The Medic is the most versatile and balanced unit in Team Fortress Classic, being the second fastest and possessing powerful weapons capable of taking out the entire enemy team in one shot.

To potentially eliminate the entire enemy team, use your Medikit (Weapon #1) on enemies. This inflicts a deadly disease that spreads to teammates upon contact. Infected players will lose health rapidly and may run to the (area where players reappear after dying) to refill their health, spreading the disease further. The only ways to cure the disease are to be healed by a friendly Medic or to die. Experienced players may resort to suicide to avoid death by disease, but this technique is very useful for annoying foes.

For maximum effect, try to infect enemies named "Player".

Medics earn points for healing teammate's infections.

Medics can perform (special jumps using grenades to propel oneself) similar to the Scout. Refer to the Scout section for instructions.

Medics can use their Super-Nailguns effectively against Soldiers. Refer to the Scout section for instructions.

Remember to heal your teammates by listening for calls like "Medic!" or "Excuse me, I'm in need of medical attention!". Be especially attentive if an enemy Medic is infecting your team.

A Medic is a good candidate for capturing objectives like flags or command points, with some considering them better at capping than the Scout.

Use your Medikit/Poison against Heavy Weapons Guys and Soldiers, unless you are confident with your grenades and Super-Shotgun. It is generally advisable to use the Super-Shotgun against Scouts and other Medics.

Medic Tips:

  • Use your Medikit/Poison to infect enemies, spreading a deadly disease.
  • Target enemies named "Player" for greatest effect.
  • Heal teammate's infections to earn points.
  • Listen for teammate calls for medical attention.
  • Consider using the Super-Shotgun against Scouts and other Medics.
  • Medics are good candidates for capturing objectives.

Heavy Weapons Guy General Strategies

The Heavy Weapons Guy is widely considered the easiest class to play, with many believing it requires no skill. However, mastering the class does require knowing what you are doing.

The basic purpose of a Heavy Weapons Guy is to use the Machine Gun to shred most classes in seconds. The main challenge for a Heavy Weapons Guy is encountering another Heavy Weapons Guy. The most critical factor is getting the first shot. At equal health and armor, it comes down to who shoots first. Try to strafe while firing to make your opponent miss, increasing your chances of survival.

Heavy Weapons Guy Tips:

  • Primarily use the Machine Gun and both types of grenades.
  • Use the Super-Shotgun only in rare situations.
  • When fighting another Heavy Weapons Guy, aim to get the first shot.
  • Strafe while firing to evade enemy fire.
