Navigate careers in The Sims 4: Royalty & Legacy. Discover 10 base game careers, branching paths, ideal moods, daily tasks, and promotion tips for faster advancement.
One of the first things you should do in your game is look for a job. This can be done via a phone, computer, or newspaper. Alternatively, hit the letter "J" on your keyboard and click the pop-up button to quickly find a job.
There are 10 different career categories in the base game, with more to be added in future expansions and DLC. Each career choice has two branching paths at some point along its progression, and you can only choose one of these paths with a given Sim. Each career path has a total of 10 levels. The best way to get to the top is to use the information in the Careers panel, which tells you exactly how to improve your performance. Completing a daily task for the job as well as being in the ideal mood both increase your performance, which will lead to promotions over time and allow you to progress.
Here are the available careers in alphabetical order.
| Career name with available paths | Ideal Mood | Daily Tasks to Perform |
|---|---|---|
| Astronaut - Space Ranger, Interstellar Smuggler | Focus | Work out |
| Athlete - Professional Athlete, Bodybuilder | Energized | Work Out |

| Criminal - Boss, Oracle | Energized | Mischievious Activity |

| Entertainer - Musician, Comedian | Inspired | Tell Jokes or Play Music |
| Painter - Master of the Real Branch, Patron of the Arts | Inspired | Painting |

To get your Sim to work on time, you can open the career button's window and click the new button to leave for work. You have 59 minutes after you're supposed to work before you're officially late, so you have a little buffer here. If you're an hour or more late, you'll get a phone call from work. You should still go as soon as you can.
When you accept your first job, you can find information about it using the careers button in the lower right hand corner of the UI (see the screenshot to the right). You'll see your job title, pay rate, available vacation days, and your work schedule. Note that your work schedule never changes unless the job itself changes, but you will start to accrue vacation days after working for a period of time.
Also visible here are the requirements for promotion. For this job, being Focused gives me a better performance rating (the bar on the right side) and helps me advance more quickly. The daily task can and should also be done every day when possible. Although it may take some time, it also greatly impacts your overall performance. Having great performance for even a short time may give you a sweet new job with a better payrate, or open up additional career paths.
When you arrive at work, you actually have more options available. See the picture below and click on the same icon that's circled in the screenshot, and you'll get a few actions that you can choose to determine what your current work style is. If you work harder, your performance will be better, but you're probably going to tire out more quickly. You can also do the opposite and take it easy, but it won't look good for your performance. If you're on the verge of a promotion, it's worth choosing this route. Other options can pay off, such "Take Risks," but obviously it's never a sure thing.
Since there are so many options for your character even while they are working, be sure to take advantage of the few hours each day you spend working to maximize your potential!
