Unreal Tournament 2004 pick-ups guide covering Health Vials, Health Packs, Big Keg O' Health, Shield Packs, Super Shield Packs, Double Damage, and Adrenaline Pills.

Pick-ups in Unreal Tournament 2004 come in various forms, primarily focused on defense with limited direct offensive capacity. Remembering their locations and respawn (be brought back to life at a checkpoint after death) times is key for any good player. Not all pick-ups are worth risking your life for, but some are essential.

Health Vial

A light blue vial that grants 5 health points. They are often found in groups of 3 or 5 and can raise your health over 100 points. Pick them up whenever you find them, even if it means taking a different route. Amassing enough Health Vials can provide a significant health advantage.

Health Pack

A blue cross that provides 25 health points, but will not raise your health above 100 points. Players often overlook these when not in immediate need. It is advisable to remember their locations and visit them often, even if you only need 10 health points. If you notice opponents going for a Health Pack during a firefight, try to intercept them.

Big Keg O’ Health

A large white and blue keg that grants 100 health points, taking your health well over the 100-point limit. This pick-up is worth going out of your way for, and even risking your life to obtain, or to deny the enemy. Learn its location and respawn time, and always go for it when it appears. Having this provides a huge advantage.

Shield Pack

A yellow shield that grants 50 armour points. Successive Shield Packs will not increase your armour above 50, unless you have picked up a Super Shield Pack or used a Booster, which allows you to reach the 150 armour point limit. Shield packs are generally always useful, but if you are low on health, prioritize healing first. It is worth going out of your way for, but not risking your life. Learn its spawn location and frequency.

Super Shield Pack

A yellow shield with a lightning bolt that grants 100 armour points. Picking up a Super Shield Pack allows subsequent Shield Packs to increase your armour up to the 150 point limit. This is a must-have item. Go out of your way and risk your life if necessary, especially to prevent the enemy from obtaining it. Remember its spawn location and respawn time, and always try to get it when it should be available, but be prepared for competition.

Double Damage

Resembles a double, stripy-purple knife from the Unreal logo. It doubles the damage of any weapon for 30 seconds. This is one of the three most important pick-ups in the game and is worth dying for. There is usually only one spawn location per map, so learn it and be there when it is about to respawn. Risking your life for it is often worthwhile, particularly to deny the enemy. It is usually a game-winner in Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch and can significantly improve performance in other modes. It also works for vehicle weapons.

Adrenaline Pill

A half-brown, half-white hex-grid capsule that grants 2 Adrenaline.

Tips
  • Remember the locations and respawn times for all important pick-ups.
  • Prioritize health and armour if you are low, but always consider denying the enemy key items like Double Damage or Super Shield Packs.
  • Health Vials, though small, can be crucial for turning the tide of battle if collected consistently.
  • Big Keg O' Health and Super Shield Packs are high-priority items worth significant risk.
  • Double Damage is a game-changing pick-up that should be secured whenever possible.
