Return to your shelter. You'll need 10 'Stone Blocks' and 5 'Wood Planks' to craft a 'Basic Furnace'. If you don't have enough stone, mine some from the walls of your shaft. Open your crafting menu (E), select the 'Furnace' recipe, and craft it. Place the furnace inside your shelter. This will be your primary means of processing raw ores into usable ingots.
Fueling the Furnace: Furnaces require fuel. 'Wood Planks' are a good starting fuel source, but 'Coal' (found deeper) is much more efficient. Place your fuel in the bottom slot of the furnace UI.
