FAQ

Find answers to common questions about Astral Chain, including game rating, controls, currency, and how to progress. Your ultimate guide to Astral Chain.

Q: What is Astral Chain?

A: Astral Chain is a stylish action game for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Platinum Games and published by Nintendo. It was released worldwide on August 30th, 2019.

Q: What is this game rated?

A: This game is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB, with added content descriptors of Drug Reference, Language, Use of Alcohol, and Violence. The game is a futuristic action setting with lots of lasers, guns, and explosions. The majority of the violence is done to odd robot creatures, although some of the human characters get injured and killed. Some characters get stabbed through, but there is no blood or any real gore.

Q: You mention compass directions in this guide, but I can't find a compass! How do I know where to go?

A: Go to your Options and turn off the map rotation. The map will appear in a fixed angle, and I've declared the tops of all those maps to be "north", just to make things a little simpler.

Q: How can I access old Files?

A: Go to your character's PC in the Briefing Room and select "File Select". If you're in the progress of the story and select an old file to return to, then you'll erase your current progress in the current File. Upon returning, you'll begin that file from the beginning. For the most part, you're not allowed to access File Select if you're too deep in the current file. Once you've completed the game, this ceases to be an issue.

Q: How can I get more money?

A: One important thing to remember is that you can sell your items at any shop in the game. In particular, you should be selling items that say they "can be recycled" are listed under the "Salvage" tab in your items. Some of these items sell for a considerable amount of money. Beyond that, things like completing extra cases and collecting the Red Matter in every File work towards collecting money as you go.

Q: How can I get more Duty Points?

A: The basic "experience points" of this game, there's no "cheap" way to get more Duty Points. You simply earn them by completing Cases and Files. You will not likely reach Master rank if you go through every File once, but if you're going for 100%, you'll be going back to these Files multiple times, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Q: How can I get more Gene Codes?

A: The currency for upgrading your Legions, Gene Codes are earned upon killing enemies. In particular, you gain a considerable number of Gene Codes for "finishing off" your enemies when the prompt appears on a Chimera enemy, moreso than if you just defeated them normally. Other than that, there aren't very many "cheap" ways of getting them, although defeating each Slime Chimera gets you 777, which isn't too shabby.

Q: How can I get more Material Codes (Common/Rare/Premium)?

A: The outright simplest way to get more Material Codes is to take the Cases in the post-game content. Each Case gets you Material Codes of various types. The longer way is to back and search through old Files for items you may have missed. Material Codes are all over the place, BUT there are not enough in the main story to get every last thing upgraded, so you'll be hitting the post-game eventually. Don't worry; there's far more than enough there in the post-game to get everything maxed out.
