Should you kill or spare Ygwulf in Avowed

Decide the fate of Ygwulf in Avowed's 'An Untimely End' quest. Explore the consequences of killing, sparing, or handing him to the Steel Garrote for different endings.

You’ll face Ygwulf during the An Untimely End quest in Avowed’s first region. Here, you’ll have three choices: fight Ygwulf to the death, spare him, or hand him over to the Steel Garrote. Each of these choices can alter the final cutscenes that play after you complete the game, deciding the future of Paradis’ rebels.

Ambassador Hylgard will not be pleased if you let your killer go.

Sparing Ygwulf

Sparing Ygwulf is the best option here. In addition to getting a piece of Adra to upgrade your gear, you also get a Writ of Passage from the rebel Stecg as you enter the Emerald Stair region. It’ll let you pass through areas controlled by the resistance like the Riverside Cave rebel camp. While Aedyr won’t take this choice well, their disappointment won’t lead to any negative consequences. This decision also grants a positive ending for the rebels. They return to their homes and other free settlements, aiding their people in any way they can.

Killing Ygwulf

Choosing to attack your killer can seem like the natural course of action. Your companions Kai and Marius will also support this decision. Defeating Ygwulf in a boss fight grants you the Blackwing Armor. It’s a good pick for stealth players as it buffs stealth attack damage by +30% and crouched movement speed by +25%. Stecg will give you the Dissident’s Warning instead of the Writ of Safe Passage. As for how the epilogue plays out, the resistance is routed and they take to hiding in the forests from Aedyr’s might.

Making Ygwulf confess

Instead of killing him, you can ask Ygwulf to confess his crimes. He’s not that hard to convince, surprisingly. This leads to an execution conducted by Inquisitor Lodwyn and the Steel Garrote. In addition, the rebels will fight back by killing Garryck. Garryck shows up in the On Strange Shores quest, but doesn’t have much of a presence once you leave Paradis. If you’re wondering where Garryck ends up, head to the Southern Embrace near the party camp and a note will detail his demise. Just like the previous option, you’ll get the Dissident’s Warning. But you’ll miss out on the Blackwing Armor drop.
