Pre-Release: A new Dead or Alive 5 project was teased in April 2013, revealing Momiji and the Sky City Tokyo stage. The game was officially named Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate in May 2013, with a September release date. It incorporated features from Dead or Alive 5+, including tutorial mode, custom soundtracks, and new costumes. Trailers confirmed the return of Leon, Ein, Jacky Bryant, and new stages like Lost World, Desert Wasteland, and Aircraft Carrier. Rachel from Ninja Gaiden was also revealed. Compatibility with online play against original Dead or Alive 5 or Plus was confirmed to be impossible due to new moves like the Power Launcher and netcode changes. Custom Soundtracks would include BGM from DOA2 and DOA3, and 2v2 Tag Mode was added.

Characters: Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate features a roster of returning and new playable characters. Notable returning characters include Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate, Ryu Hayabusa, Helena Douglas, Christie, La Mariposa (Lisa Hamilton), and Hitomi. Each character has their own background and motivations within the game's story.
