Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Part 19 guide covering dust clouds, minefields, capturing frigates, and station assault.
Walkthrough
- 1Repeat the process to return to the Mothership (MS) and clear other dust clouds.
- 2Repair any units damaged by radiation and set up an assault squad: one carrier with 25 heavy corvettes, another carrier with 22 salvage corvettes, a missile corvette, and 5-10 scouts for repair.
- 3Deploy corvettes towards the nearest red dot; a multigu n corvette wing will attack but will be no match for the heavy corvette wing.
- 4Repair units, move forward slowly staying within the dust cloud, and have destroyers go to the location of the first red dot, leaving a ship behind to mark it.
- 5Launch scouts to take out mine layers while the carrier absorbs mine damage. Support craft should repair the carrier.
- 6Alternatively, lure mines with a lone bomber to take out a mine layer, or use missile destroyers to attack mines (though this is a waste of time).
- 7Optional: Capture mine layers, but be mindful of your corvette limit.
- 8Send scouts forward and use the tactical overlay (a display showing unit positions and orders) to locate 3 mine layers, then approach a capital ship shape.
- 9As the capital ships move towards you, inch forward to lure destroyers to chase a scout.
- 10Send salvagers to capture the capital ships, which are usually focused on the scout and ignore the salvagers until it's too late.
- 11Capture the heavy cruiser similarly once enough salvage corvettes are available.
- 12Move carriers to where the heavy cruiser was. Dock salvagers to save resources, or retire them at the MS and rebuild them at the carriers if you have RUs (Resource Units) to spare.
Optional Section B:
- Leave a fighter to mark the heavy cruiser's position.
- With two carriers (each containing 25 heavy corvettes, all salvage corvettes, and some repair corvettes), move through radiation fields to two dots lower on the map.
- You will encounter 5 assault frigates that will attack your carriers. Launch repair corvettes to support the carrier under fire and salvage corvettes to steal them.
- After capturing the assault frigates, leave them and repeat with the other red dot of assault frigates.
- Repair your carriers, dock this battle group, and sail back to where you left the fighter.
Final Assault Preparation:
- Do not attack the station directly yet, as the assault frigates will join the fight.
- Line up support frigates behind the carriers and bring destroyers to the point where you left the fighter.
- Keep some destroyers in reserve.
Note: This mission is significantly harder in V1 compared to V1.05, as the 40 defenders in V1 have the firepower of 30 instead of 5, potentially destroying carriers quickly even with full support.
Assault Methods:
- Bait Method: Send scouts on afterburners to attack the carrier, causing it to prepare to jump. Send in supported salvagers to capture it. Keep a heavy corvette escort around it and be prepared for docked strike craft. Your picket fleet around the MS will deal with them easily if salvage craft are supported. This method ensures minimum losses.
- Method #1 (Medium Difficulty, Large Fleet Gain, 6 minutes max): After capturing ships, regroup with salvagers inside carriers. Send carriers supported by support frigates (preferably Kushan ones with self-repair beams) into the radiation space. Launch salvage corvettes to capture all capital ships, turning support away from the carrier to the salvage corvettes. Launch heavy corvettes to destroy defenders. You can then send in destroyers or use captured capital ships to attack the station. If you did not capture the assault frigates, they will join the fight. Once the station is destroyed, dock quickly to avoid damage and jump.
- Method #2 (Easy Difficulty, Minimal Fleet Gain, 4 minutes max): Without Optional Section B, send in destroyers supported by heavies to wipe out everything. Take out frigates first, then assault frigates. This is a quick battle with minimal gains.
- Method #3 (Hard Difficulty, Large Fleet Gain, 8 minutes max): Without Optional Section B, send destroyers as bait, supported by other units. Send in a carrier to act as a refit base and capture ion cannons and assault frigates as they approach. Mop up the remaining defenders.
Tips
- Repair any damaged units in radiation zones.
- Set up an assault squad with a mix of heavy corvettes, salvage corvettes, missile corvettes, and scouts for repair.
- Use dust clouds for cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects).
- Mark locations of interest with a spare ship for easy identification.
- When dealing with mines, use scouts to destroy mine layers, or lure mines with a bomber.
- Consider capturing mine layers if you are not over your corvette limit.
- Use the tactical overlay (HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap) display) to identify enemy positions and capital ships.
- Capture capital ships and heavy cruisers using salvage corvettes.
- Dock salvagers to the carrier to save resources, or retire them if you have RUs to spare.
- In Optional Section B, capture assault frigates by launching repair and salvage corvettes.
- Prepare a strong reserve force of destroyers for the final assault.
- The V1 version of this mission is significantly harder due to increased defender firepower.
- Method #1 allows for capturing capital ships and a large fleet gain.
- Method #2 is a quick, straightforward assault with minimal gains.
- Method #3 involves capturing ion cannons and assault frigates while using destroyers as bait.
