Conquer Part 23 of your Magic: The Gathering Arena journey with our comprehensive guide. Learn strategies, deck breakdowns, and tips for victory.
Walkthrough
- 1Deck Breakdown: The opponent's deck consists of 16 creatures (Bladetusk Boar, Cosi's Ravager, Kiln Fiend, Vent Sentinel), 8 sorceries (Magma Rift, Roiling Terrain), 12 instants (Burst Lightning, Seismic Shudder, Unstable Footing), and 24 lands (23 Mountain, 1 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle).
- 2Key Cards and Abilities:
- Bladetusk Boar: Intimidate, can only be blocked by red creatures.
- 3Cosi's Ravager: Deals 1 damage on Landfall.
- 4Kiln Fiend: Grows stronger when red instants are cast.
- 5Vent Sentinel: Deals damage equal to the number of creatures the opponent controls.
- 6Magma Rift: Deals 2 damage and exiles the target if it dies.
- 7Roiling Terrain: Destroys a land and deals damage based on lands in the opponent's hand.
- 8Seismic Shudder: Deals 1 damage to all non-flying creatures.
- 9Burst Lightning: Can be kicked for 4 damage.
- 10Unstable Footing: Can be kicked for 5 damage.
- 11Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle: Deals 3 damage when a Mountain enters the battlefield, if you control 5 or more Mountains.
- 12Planeswalker Difficulty Change: Magma Rift (2 damage) is replaced with Flame Slash (4 damage, CMC 1), which does not exile.
Tips
- Flyers: The opponent's creatures lack reach, making flyers a viable strategy. Consider powerful flyers like Seraph of the Masses, Aegis Angel, Baneslayer Angel, Griselbrand, or Rune-Scarred Demon.
- Milling: Exploit the opponent's poor draw power with milling strategies. Cards like Tome Scour can remove key noncombat damage sources. Hand destruction spells (Monomania, Mind Rot, Liliana's Specter) are also effective, especially early on. Be cautious, as milling can deplete your own hand, and mill-related creatures are vulnerable.
- Life Gain: A direct counter to indirect damage. Cards with lifelink are beneficial, especially beatsticks with lifelink like Baneslayer Angel or Griselbrand, which can survive damage and draw enemy fire. A high life total also helps mitigate Valakut's damage.
- Redirect Damage: A fun combo using Palisade Giant's ability to redirect damage. Pairing it with Aegis Angel for indestructibility can make it a powerful, unkillable redirector. Protect Aegis Angel with cheap white spells (Gods Willing, Cloudshift, Safe Passage) or blue counters, or by buffing it with auras.
- Recycling: Utilize creatures with Undying (e.g., with Undying Evil), graveyard recursion (Rescue from the Underworld), and creatures that can be used as fodder (Dead Reckoning). Elixirs of Immortality can provide both recycling and life gain. Charmbreaker Devils are useful for red/black recycling strategies.
- General Advice: Life gain is paramount. Incorporate draw power and land ramp if possible. Destroying Valakut (using Demolish, Tectonic Rift, or Mold Shambler) can prevent significant damage.
- Effective Cards: Arbor Colossus, Archaeologist, Charmbreaker Devils, Creepy Doll, Genesis Hydra, Nemesis of Mortals, Nessian Asp, Phytotitan, Primal Huntbeast, Quickling, Rescue from the Underworld, Rhox Faithmender, Rune-Scarred Demon, Soul of Zendikar, Terra Stomper, Vent Sentinel.
- Multiplayer Boosters: Cloudshift (flickers to avoid damage), Mold Shambler (can destroy noncreature targets when kicked), Stoneforge Mystic (searches for equipment).
