You can become friends with every character in Sandrock by visiting them, giving gifts, going on Play Dates, sparring, hosting parties, speaking with them at events, letting them admire relics, doing commissions, and playing mini-games. Gaining extra points by giving a gift on a character's birthday is also possible. Many of these actions can be initiated from the NPC interaction menu.
There are seven friendship levels, each requiring a certain number of points:

Each character has specific gifts they love and like, which will increase their heart level. As you progress through friendship levels, new features like Photos and Play Dates become available. At the Friend level, you are guaranteed a birthday gift, and a Good Friend sends more valuable gifts. Some characters may send random gifts via mail. Befriending store owners grants discounts, and characters like Logan, Justice, Mi-ann, Unsuur, and Pen offer stat buffs at certain friendship levels.
To get married, reach the three-star friendship level and invite them on play dates. Once you have earned friend status (three stars), you can confess your feelings using a Heart Knot (128 Gols from the General Store). The higher your friendship, the more likely the confession will be accepted, changing their relation to boyfriend/girlfriend. You can date multiple characters, but jealousy can occur if they see you on a date with someone else after confessing, leading to a 50-point loss with both characters.

To propose marriage, you need three-heart level, a workshop expanded to level five, and an Engagement Ring (3,000 Gols from the Mysterious Man, available on the 20th and 21st of each month). Special quests for characters like Elsie and Logan must be completed before full romance is possible.
After marriage, your partner moves in and helps with workshop tasks. Other romantic interests revert to friendship status. A child can be conceived by placing a baby's crib in your home. Divorce is possible by giving your partner a broken mirror (20,000 Gols from the Mysterious Man), which causes affection to plummet and the partner to leave. Divorced characters can be remarried if friendship is rebuilt.
