Navigate Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance's alignment system. Discover story and quest choices that influence your path to Law, Chaos, or Neutral endings and unique rewards.

Unlike previous Shin Megami Tensei entries, Alignment in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance does NOT affect the ending. Only a final choice after the final dungeon segment determines your ending route. However, picking an ending that matches your alignment awards a unique miracle, exclusive to that route.

Alignment is decided by two factors: various choices in certain scenes and completing certain quests or making choices within specific quests. This guide compiles all alignment-affecting choices.

Some choices carry more weight than others. You may not see an immediate shift after some, but will after others. The more choices you make towards one alignment, the harder it will be to overturn them. Entering a playthrough with a specific ending in mind and a target alignment is recommended.

The neutral ending has no unique bonuses requiring alignment, allowing flexibility. Be aware that certain decisions granting specific alignment points may also cut you off from other quests; this occurs in only one instance near the end of the game, so read carefully.

This guide divides information between Story choices (events that cannot be avoided) and Quest choices (optional and can be taken at any time). In the below sections, (N) denotes Neutral (0 points towards any camp), and (L) and (C) denote Law and Chaos, respectively.

Disclaimer: This information was gained through trial and error. While all listed choices ABSOLUTELY affect alignment, there might be other choices in the game that also affect it. As long as you don't choose incorrectly too many times, answering in line with your target alignment should suffice.

Quest Choices

This section is ordered by appearance.

There are special quests in each region involving two NPCs in conflict. They will both ask you to kill the other. Accepting one quest requires you to forfeit the other. Choose the alignment you desire and accept that quest.

  • Minato: Apsaras (L) vs Leanan Sidhe (C)
  • Shinagawa: Principality (L) vs Lilim (C)
  • Chiyoda: Dionysius (L) vs Black Frost (C)
  • Taito: Futsunushi (L) vs Adramelech (C)

Other quests, while appearing normal, will have choices that affect alignment. These typically involve killing or not killing a demon, or performing good/bad or selfish/unselfish actions.

Shinagawa (Quest)

  • A Wish for a Fish Quest, King Frost post-fight conversation:
    • Finish him and take the fish (C)
    • Let him go (L)
  • A Goddess Stolen Quest, Eat Idun's apple:

    • Sacrifices are necessary. (L)
    • Sacrifices should be avoided. (N)

Taito/Egyptian Quest Line

This special quest line unlocks near the end of the game. Speaking to a Dominion near Main Street Asakusa prompts you to defeat and kill Khonsu in Odaiba, which unlocks Odaiba and begins the quest chain.

  • The Egyptian's Fate Quest, Post-battle with Khonsu:

Warning: Killing Khonsu locks you out of the 3rd and final quest of this chain, though the 2nd can still be completed. The 3rd quest also contains an alignment-affecting choice.

    • Finish him off (L)
    • Stow your weapon (N)
  • The Succession of Ra Quest, Post-battle with Khonsu Ra:
    • Deal the final blow (C)
    • Stop Khonsu (L)
    • Do nothing (N)
