Learn how to navigate the Netherworld: Minato in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This guide covers the tutorial, combat basics, stats, Gustave's shop, and finding your first Miman.

You will now begin your first battle as the game explains Press Turns. For now consider Press Turns as the number of actions you can perform. Select skills and choose to attack.

The game will then explain affinities. Think of them like Pokemon weaknesses and types. When you hit an enemy weakness, you will get an extra turn. You need to figure out an enemy's weakness through trial and error. The enemy in front of you, Daemon, is weak to electricity, so you will be made to use Zio. Unlike normal attacks, spells and other actions use MP.

If you miss an attack, or if an enemy can drain or block your attack, you will use 2 or more press turns instead of one, which can put you in extreme danger. The reverse is also true: enemies also use press turns. You will also gain access to Change, Talk, and Guard. Guard lets you take reduced damage and prevents being hit by weaknesses and criticals, and it also stops ailments.

Continue attacking Daemon's weakness with Zio. After you win, the Protagonist, referred to as the Nahobino, will Level up and gain some Macca (currency). When you level up, some of your stats will naturally increase, but you will also gain an additional bonus point to place into a specific stat of your choice.

The 5 Major stats are:

  • Strength: Increases Damage for Normal attacks and Physical attack skills.
  • Vitality: Reduces damage taken. Doesn't affect HP.
  • Magic: Increases Damage for Magic attacks such as Zio. Can also increase the amount healed using healing magic.
  • Agility: Increases the chance of various actions such as gaining initiative, escape rate, hit rate, and evasion.
  • Luck: Affects luck-based events such as critical attacks or landing them yourself. May also affect Evasion rate.

If playing on Normal or higher, it is advised to assign skill points to focus on 2 key stats instead of spreading them out. A strength build or a magic build offers better survival chances with specialization.

When you have control, move around. You can access the menu with X, Jump with B, and Attack with Y. You can also run with ZL and ZR. Keep moving towards the objective until a scene occurs. Pick up the Magatsuhi as you advance to replenish HP, MP, and gain Magatsuhi.

Continue forward, jumping over rocks and using Climb points until you reach the top and see a large yellow crystal. This is a treasure chest containing 500 Macca. Break it open with Y and continue until you reach the objective.

The Lay of the Land (Main quest)

You will now receive a Main quest, which contains objectives for the main story. The quest tab is also unlocked. Make your way down the slope through the ruined Tokyo. After a short distance, a scene will occur, introducing you to Leylines and Gustave. You will then be able to buy items from Gustave. Gustave sells elemental attack items for 200 Macca, elemental nullifiers for 150, spy glasses (to reveal enemy info) for 100, and healing items for various prices. It is best to only spend a bit on medicine as you have no way to heal during battles yet.

After you leave, you will gain access to 3 abilities at leylines: Saving game data, entering Gustave's shop, and Recovery. Healing yourself via recovery isn't free, but it is cheap for the time being. Be sure to heal and save before continuing. Gustave has also asked you to find his Miman, a side activity that rewards you as you find more of them.

Press forward and you will see a small creature with a red glow; this is a Miman. Talk to it to receive 5 Glory. Return to Gustave via the leyline, and he will reward you with an Onmoraki essence. In Gustave's shop, there is a section listing rewards for the total number of Mimans found, starting at 5 and going up to 200. For a full list of Miman locations, see the Miman location guide.

Continue past the rubble where you found the Miman. Nearby, you will see a vending machine; examine it to collect a Soda, a relic you can sell to Gustave for Macca. From the vending machine, go north-east up the stairs on the east side of the road to find Miman number 2. Continue forward past the walkway and you will see a small fairy on the road: the demon Pixie. Approach her for a brief scene, initiating a tutorial for Demon negotiation. Instead of a normal battle, select Talk. You cannot fail this negotiation, as selecting the wrong answers will cause the choice to repeat.
