Learn about Spyro's health system, Sparx the dragonfly, losing lives, and gaining extra lives. Master all of Spyro's moves including charging, gliding, and flame breath.
Walkthrough
- 1Health System & Sparx: Sparx, a dragonfly, follows Spyro and acts as a health indicator. He starts yellow and turns blue, then green, then disappears when Spyro takes damage or falls into liquid. If Sparx disappears and Spyro takes more hits, he loses a life.
- 2Healing Sparx: To restore Sparx's color, find and kill small animals like sheep, chickens, or rabbits. They release butterflies that Sparx eats, healing him one notch.
- 3Losing Lives: A life is lost if Spyro falls off an edge, drowns, or gets hit when Sparx is gone. You start with 5 lives. Losing all lives results in a game over, returning you to the home level of the world without saving progress in the current level.
- 4Gaining Extra Lives: Prevent game overs by collecting silver statues of a dragon found in chests. Alternatively, revisit levels where defeated enemies now drop silver orbs instead of gems. Collecting 20 silver orbs grants an extra life.
- 5Moving: Use the Directional Buttons (D-pad) or the Left Analog Stick. The D-pad makes Spyro run in 8 directions. The Analog Stick allows walking with a slight push and running with a full push, in infinite directions.
- 6Camera Control: The camera usually follows Spyro automatically. You can manually rotate it left by holding L2 and right by holding R2. The Right Analog Stick has no function. In the 'Options' menu, you can switch between 'Passive' (slower, precise) and 'Active' (faster, keeps up) camera modes.
- 7Jumping, Gliding, and Dropping: Tap X for a short jump, hold X for a higher jump. Tap X again mid-air to glide. Glide from the peak of a jump for more distance. Tap Triangle mid-glide to drop straight down. You can control direction while jumping and steer while gliding. Pushing backward while gliding slows your descent.
- 8Flight (Powerup): In certain levels, gliding becomes flight. Control it like gliding but move straight ahead. Push up to fly downwards and down to fly upwards.
- 9Flips (Powerup): Hold L1 for a 180-flip and R1 for a 360-flip during flight.
- 10Flame Breath: Tap O to breathe fire for about two seconds, reaching about three times Spyro's length. Effective against most enemies, but not metal objects or armor. You can flame while spinning, jumping, or gliding.
- 11Powerflame (Powerup): Kissing a purple fairy temporarily turns Spyro's flame into a powerflame, capable of destroying metal and armor. An orange fairy in one level grants permanent powerflame for that level.
- 12Charge Attack: Hold [] to charge forward very fast. You can turn and jump while charging. Used to catch thieves and penetrate metal/armor, but not effective against large enemies.
- 13Supercharging (Powerup): Charge down slopes with arrows on them. Spyro will glow with steam and charge extremely fast until he stops.
