Just escaped the refugee camp? Learn how to find and claim your very first base in State of Decay 2, including dealing with zombies and securing the property.

Alright, you've made it out of that refugee camp! State of Decay 2 is about to get real as you'll find yourself running out of fuel in whatever town you picked. Don't sweat it, though – finding a new home is your next big step.

First things first, open up your map. You can do this by hitting the M key. Look for a house with an orange icon near where your ride conks out. Click on that icon, and bam – you've got a waypoint. This is your target for a new base.

As you drive or walk towards that waypoint, you'll notice other houses and buildings. Some might be crawling with zombies, while others could be home to friendly survivors who might just become your new neighbors. It's totally up to you whether you want to loot these places or make a beeline straight for your potential new home. Your call!

Once you reach the house marked by the orange icon, expect a bit of a welcome party. There will be zombies trying to bash their way in from the outside, and a few more waiting for you inside. Keep an eye out, because one of them is a nasty Plague Zombie. You absolutely need to take it down before it gets a chance to bite you or the army guard who's tagging along. That guard is important, so don't let him get sick!

To officially claim the house as your own, you'll need to clear it out completely. That means checking every single room. Don't worry about getting lost; your minimap will show you little square icons for any rooms that still need a sweep. Once every zombie is dealt with and every room is checked, you'll finally be able to claim the house as your main base, and this mission will be wrapped up.

With your new base secured, the rest of your community will start moving in. You'll immediately get access to new facilities to build and manage, and you'll see a new home status indicator in the top left corner. This tells you crucial info like your current supplies, what needs doing around the base, and if any survivors are unfortunately suffering from the Blood Plague. Welcome home!
