Custom spells created with the Spellmaker in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall are always better than premade spells. You have the ability to specify exactly what you want them to do, name them whatever you wish, and they frequently cost less to purchase and cast compared to premade spells. Some spell effects are only accessible if you create the spell yourself.

Premade spells exist primarily for quests. Some Mages Guild quests specifically require you to cast a certain premade spell; custom spells will not suffice for these tasks, and you must purchase the required premade spell from the guild. Outside of these specific quest requirements, you should generally avoid using canned spells.
