Understanding Your Score Components

Your final score for each level is determined by four key metrics, each contributing to your overall rank:

• Smiley Flowers: These are the primary collectibles and the most crucial for perfect scores. Each level has a fixed number of Smiley Flowers to find.
• Coins: Collect as many coins as possible. While not directly tied to a specific rank, a high coin count contributes to unlocking new costumes and purchasing items from the Souvenir Shop.
• Red Coins: Each level contains 20 hidden Red Coins. Finding all of them is essential for a perfect score.
• Full Health: Finishing a level with all 20 hearts (full health) is a requirement for the highest rank.

Achieving the “Smiley Flower” Rank

To earn the ultimate “Smiley Flower” rank on any given level, you must successfully complete all of the following objectives in a single run:

1. Collect all Smiley Flowers: This is non-negotiable. Scour every nook and cranny, hit every hidden cloud, and solve all puzzles to reveal them.
2. Collect all 20 Red Coins: These are often cleverly disguised or placed in hard-to-reach areas. Pay close attention to suspicious-looking objects, background elements, and areas that seem to invite exploration.
3. Finish with Full Health (20 Hearts): This is arguably the most challenging aspect for many players. Every hit you take reduces your heart count.

Strategies for Full Health

• Wear Protective Costumes: Before starting a level, visit the Souvenir Shop and equip a costume. Costumes act as a protective layer, absorbing one hit before Yoshi takes damage. Higher rarity costumes (e.g., Robot Yoshi, Train Yoshi) can absorb multiple hits, making them invaluable for maintaining full health.
• Prioritize Enemies: Don't rush past enemies. Take the time to defeat them with eggs or by stomping to avoid unnecessary damage.
• use Flutter Jump: Yoshi's signature Flutter Jump allows for precise platforming and can help you avoid hazards. Practice timing your jumps to clear gaps and dodge projectiles.
• Egg Management: Always keep a full stock of eggs (up to 6). Eggs are your primary offensive tool and can also be used to hit distant targets or reveal hidden items. Replenish your egg supply by eating enemies or hitting Egg Blocks.
• Take it Slow: Especially on your first few attempts at a perfect run, don't feel pressured to speed through the level. Explore thoroughly and observe enemy patterns.
• Identify Healing Items: Look out for Heart Flowers and other healing items. Collect them strategically when you've taken damage.

Finding Hidden Items: A Detailed Approach

Many of the Smiley Flowers and Red Coins are not immediately obvious. Here’s how to find them:

1. Background & Foreground Exploration

• Throw Eggs at Everything: If an object in the background or foreground looks even slightly out of place, throw an egg at it. Many hidden clouds, coin stashes, and even Smiley Flowers are revealed this way.
• Look for Sparkles: Sometimes, a faint sparkle or shimmer will indicate a hidden item’s location, especially for Red Coins.
• Interact with Objects: Push, pull, or jump on any interactive elements. For example, in levels like Sunshine Station, pushing certain blocks might reveal a hidden path or item.

2. Hidden Clouds

• Invisible Clouds: Many clouds are completely invisible until hit with an egg. If you’re missing items, try throwing eggs into empty spaces, especially above suspicious platforms or near the edges of the screen.
• Coin Trails: Follow trails of regular coins. Often, these lead to a hidden cloud containing Red Coins or a Smiley Flower.
• Sound Cues: Listen for the distinct sound effect when you hit a hidden cloud.

3. Character-Specific Quests (Poochy Pups)

• On the flip side of each level (the “Flip-Side”), you’ll be tasked with finding three Poochy Pups within a time limit. Successfully finding all three rewards you with a Smiley Flower. These are often in challenging locations, requiring quick movement and knowledge of the level layout.

4. Souvenir Shop & Crafting

• While not directly part of the in-level score, collecting enough coins allows you to purchase new costumes from the Souvenir Shop. As mentioned, these costumes are vital for maintaining full health and thus achieving the “Smiley Flower” rank. Prioritize purchasing costumes with higher durability.
