Master the Belial boss fight in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake! Learn his attacks, weaknesses, and the best strategies to defeat him.

Alright, you've made it to the Faerie Palace, and it's time to face Belial. This guy can be a real tough cookie, dishing out a mix of physical and magical attacks. Don't let him get you down, though; we'll get through this!

Belial's Attacks:

  • Normal Attack: Hits one character for about 70 damage.
  • Desperate Attack: A stronger physical hit.
  • Buff: He'll boost his physical defense. Nothing you can do but ride it out.
  • Magic Barrier: Boosts his magic defense a bit. Since he's already resistant to most magic, this isn't a huge deal unless you're using wind spells.
  • Boom: Hits your whole party for around 20 damage if Magic Barrier is up, more if it's not.
  • Wildfire: Another party-wide breath attack, doing about 30-35 damage. Insulatle can help reduce this.
  • Moreheal: Belial can heal himself for a hefty 170 HP. Just something to deal with.
  • Kaboom: Once his health turns yellow, he'll start using this instead of Boom. It's nasty, hitting everyone for about 50-60 damage even with Magic Barrier.

Belial Boss Strategies:

Belial is tricky because he often acts twice per turn, and even gets a third action when his health gets low. Keeping Magic Barrier up is crucial, especially to mitigate the damage from Boom and Kaboom. Seriously, don't let that spell drop!

You'll also want to keep Kabuff active at all times. His physical attacks can really sting, especially for characters like Peronel and Matilda who aren't built to take heavy hits. You can't really debuff Belial effectively, as he's super resistant to things like Sap. So, it's mostly about hitting him hard and healing up.

Your Hero should be on the offensive. Have Peronel cast Oomph on the Hero to boost their damage. The Platinum Sword from Dirkandor's Tombola Stall is great, or use the Propellor Blade for extra damage. Occasionally, the Hero can use Attack Attacker to lower Belial's strength a bit – it's one of the few debuffs that actually works here.

For your other characters, Caradoc can help with buffs and healing, maybe throwing in some attacks. Peronel is your main buffer and healer. If you've explored thoroughly, the Soothing Song Scroll can provide a small party-wide heal. If you're willing to grind a bit, Peronel learns Multiheal at level 32, which makes this fight much easier.

If you're not grinding, aiming for levels 27-29 should be okay, but expect a challenge. Matilda doesn't have a super clear role here. You can give her the Kabuff Scroll to help with buffing, and she can cast Insulatle if you're worried about Wildfire. Her Heal spell is limited, but she does get Wizardly Waft, which can help restore MP for the party.

Things get really intense when Belial's health turns yellow. He might get three actions, and he'll swap Boom for the devastating Kaboom. Make sure Magic Barrier is up to survive those hits, which can be around 55-65 damage per character. Any turn he *doesn't* use Kaboom is a win! If you can out-heal this phase, you'll be able to defeat him.

After you beat Belial, he'll give you some info about mermaids being attacked and then vanish. You'll receive Lorelei's Harp, which is your key to reaching the mermaid's domain. Your next destination is Gaggle Rock.
