Navigate the toxic waste level and sludge mounds in Half-Life: Alyx Part 9. Find the HEG crate and learn enemy tactics.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Climb the shelves to the top, then use the kinetic blast (KB) on the PS that drops in.
  2. 2
After clearing the area, choose an option from the above list, then make the jump to the XP platform and exit through the duct.
  3. 3
Once outside, drop down to the toxic waste level. Orient yourself before activating the AI.
  4. 4
Follow the path forward, hopping over toxic sludge mounds. Drop to ground level and face the toxic sludge.
  5. 5
Press and hold sprint, releasing only briefly to orient from mound #2 toward mound #3.
  6. 6
Later, on the concrete, you will need to use the kinetic blast (KB) to clear enemies blocking the XP ladder, then sprint until you are climbing the XP and standing on the platform with the HEG crate.
  7. 7
From behind the gate at sludge level, sprint toward the sludge and downhill, then jump from dry mound #1 to mound #2 on your right.
  8. 8
Continue past the corner of the perimeter wall. Halfway along dry mound #2, bear left and jump to mound #3.
  9. 9
Aim to land at the far right edge of mound #3, as 3 zombies (2 walkers and 1 crawler) will be approaching the corner of the wall.
  10. 10
You will hit the ground on mound #3, sprint a step or two and then jump again just to the right of the zombie near the corner. You may take damage if you land in the sludge.
  11. 11
Jump to mound #4 and continue to and along the fence, then turn right at the corner.
  12. 12
Turn on your flashlight (FL), continue to sprint over the slanted concrete to the fence opening.
  13. 13
Hook hard left around the fence to the perimeter wall and just past the energy ball (EB) at the column.
  14. 14
Locate the zombie below (ZB) near the XP; it will either be to the right of the ladder, facing away, or behind other zombies with enough room to sprint, leap, and climb.
  15. 15
If the ZB runs at you, wait for it to drift right toward you, then strafe left and sprint to the ladder and climb.
  16. 16
Alternatively, you can use the kinetic blast (KB) on the energy ball (EB) to distract the zombies (Zs) then sprint toward their previous position and then to the ladder.
  17. 17
If you have been closely following the guide, you should not need HEGs. Avoid hanging around if you hear beeps, as this often angers the ZB enough to trigger a grenade (G). Sprint along the fence to the supply crate (SC).
  18. 18
If you chose to keep the blade, after dropping down past the large pipes to sludge level, remain inside the caged area with the pipe.
  19. 19
With the blade in your gravity gun (GG), walk past the large vertical pipe and stop just as the blade contacts the side of the fence XP.
  20. 20
Aim just to the right of the elevated building's stilts (1-1.5 virtual feet), then zoom and raise sights to the ridge of the building's roof.
  21. 21
Raise the blade so that the roof ridge disappears, then fire it. You may see dust rising from the blade hitting and embedding into the concrete. If it splashes, do not panic yet, make your run to the XP platform.
  22. 22
From here, follow the route and tactics of option #1 to gain access to the XP platform.
  23. 23
At the top of the ladder and to the right is a HEG crate; resupply if needed.
  24. 24
If you want the blade, ensure the ZB below isn't going to pop a G on you, then creep out over the top of the lower level fence.
  25. 25
Begin to use your gravity gun (GG) on the sludge below if you can't see the blade and pull it to you.
  26. 26
Continue to the supply crate (SC); break it open and retrieve the supplies from under the fence.
  27. 27
At the next drop down, you will see a large set of outflow pipes.
  28. 28
The fastest way through all the barriers (BGs) and sludge doesn't require the kinetic blast (KB) or blade but does require timing, speed, dexterity, and preparation for a jump off the pipes as soon as the pulse (PST) begins its wind-up.
  29. 29
If you elected to keep the blade and wish to use it on the PST, carry it further. The farthest it can be carried is onto bridge section #2, then use the gravity gun (GG) to move it to the XP tunnel gate for Freeman Pontifex. It will not stay in or on the car while moving over bridge section #2, nor will it remain after Alyx and you get in. It falls out with the slightest side-to-side movement or stop-and-go.
  30. 30
Run and jump to the mound with the column, hop to the spool and then to the pipes.
  31. 31
Run up the pipes to the next column then backstep down the pipe as the PST begins its wind-up.
Tips
  • When at ground level looking out over the sludge, press and hold sprint, releasing only a moment to orient from mound #2 toward mound #3.
  • Later on the concrete, you will need to use the kinetic blast (KB) to clear enemies blocking the XP ladder, then sprint until you are climbing the XP and standing on the platform with the HEG crate.
  • If you have trouble with the ZB options, you can use the kinetic blast (KB) on the energy ball (EB) to distract the zombies (Zs) then sprint toward their previous position and then to the ladder.
  • If you're lugging the blade, aiming too high may cause it to bounce off the floor band of the elevated building, too low and it may land too deep into the sludge.
  • If you see the blade splash instead of concrete dust, do not despair. Once you're on the XP platform (with HEG crate), you can walk the top of the fence to get closer to the blade in or out of the sludge.
  • The fastest way through the sludge doesn't require the KB or blade but does require timing, speed, dexterity, and for you to prep for a jump off the pipes as soon as the PST begins its wind-up.
