Learn about Master Chief, Cortana, Captain Keyes, UNSC Marines, Covenant, Foehammer, and 343 Guilty Spark in Halo: Combat Evolved.
Master Chief
Master Chief is the protagonist you play as in Halo: Combat Evolved. He is a SPARTAN II, a specialized type of Marine, and the last surviving member of his unit. Aided by the artificial intelligence (AI) Cortana, he aims to stop the Halo from destroying the universe.
Cortana
Cortana is the AI who assists you throughout most of Halo: Combat Evolved. Once placed in the back of your helmet, she guides you and can call for evacuation and troops. Captain Keyes instructs you to keep her away from the Covenant, as her capture could reveal sensitive information, including the location of Earth.
Foehammer
Foehammer is the pilot of the Pelican ship, often called by Cortana for evacuation at the end of levels. She is also referred to as Echo 419. Foehammer is tragically lost when two Banshees shoot down her ship as you attempt to escape the Pillar of Autumn at the end of the game.
Captain Jacob Keyes
Captain Keyes leads the UNSC forces and is responsible for landing the Pillar of Autumn on Halo to investigate its capabilities. He provides you with your first weapon and entrusts you with Cortana. He is captured twice; upon the first capture, you rescue him, and he acquires a Needler. You must protect him, as his actions can lead to his demise, resulting in a return to the last checkpoint (an auto-save point you restart from on death) (a saved point in the game).
UNSC Marines
These soldiers assist you for the first six levels of Halo: Combat Evolved, disappearing after you complete the 343 Guilty Spark mission. Notable marines include SGT. Johnson and PVT. Jenkins. Marines typically wield Assault Rifles, firing in three-round bursts, but may later use Shotguns and Covenant weapons. They can be particularly effective as gunners in a Warthog.
Covenant
The Covenant are an alien race responsible for the destruction of planet Reach. Their current objective is to locate and conquer Earth. Your role is to prevent this by destroying the Halo.
343 Guilty Spark
This character is a floating monitor with a blue glow, encountered at the end of the level named after him. He informs you about the Flood threat and directs you to retrieve an index needed to activate Halo and potentially wipe out the galaxy. He appears in every level after you meet him, except for Keyes, and can be heard humming and singing.
