Alright, let's talk about protecting the train in Into the Breach. This is a pretty common objective, and it can pop up on pretty much any island except for that one special island, Pinnacle. It's not too complicated once you know what you're up against and how the train itself works.

Train Mechanics:

  • The train itself takes up two tiles on the map and it's always on the move, covering two tiles each turn. Keep an eye on its path!
  • When the train takes damage, it always hits the front first. This is important because any damage to the train will also stop it dead in its tracks.
  • If the train *does* get damaged, the objective will shift to "Defend the damaged train." You'll get 1 Corporate Reputation for this, which is a nice little bonus.
  • The Ice Mech is your friend here! It can freeze the entire train, making it immune to one attack and stopping its movement. This can be a lifesaver.
  • Other shielding equipment, or the Defense Mech itself, can also put a shield around the train, protecting it from incoming fire.

Enemy Threats and How to Deal with Them:

  • The Firefly isn't usually a huge problem, but don't ignore it. Your Artillery Mech can chip away at it from a distance (try hitting the one in E2), and your Combat Mech can finish it off.
  • The Cannon Mech can be a bit of a wild card. It'll often move to F4 and push a Soldier Psion into a Leaper. This is actually good! The Leaper takes damage from the bump and also from the Soldier Psion dying, which removes 1 HP from all Vek.
  • Strategy Tip: Use your Artillery Mech to hit E4. This will push the Cannon Mech out of any webbing it might be stuck in.
  • Your Combat Mech is great for taking out threats. Try to use it to kill the Firefly in C2, using both its weapon and its push ability.
  • Don't forget the Cannon Mech's primary job: use it to eliminate that Leaper in F5.
  • Later in the fight, you might need to deal with Hornets. Move your Combat Mech to C3 to handle both a Hornet and a Leaper there.
  • You'll want to position your Artillery Mech carefully to avoid taking bump damage from the Cannon Mech. Moving it to B6 and attacking the Hornet in F6 is a solid move.
  • Finally, use your Cannon Mech to finish off that Hornet in G6.
