Shang Tsung absorbs Shao Kahn's soul and power in Mortal Kombat 9, then trains to stop a corrupted Liu Kang.

After consuming Shao Kahn's soul and absorbing his immense power, Shang Tsung was overwhelmed by his newfound sorcery and fled to Outworld.

Just before he could commit suicide, Shang Tsung was visited by Bo' Rai Cho, who offered to teach him to control his dark magic. This training was for a specific purpose: Liu Kang had become a god, corrupted by his power and transformed into a tyrant who needed to be stopped.

Following rigorous training, Shang Tsung mastered the one technique that could finish Liu Kang, preparing for his vengeance.
