Learn about Familiar Signs, catching familiars with Esther's Serenade, and feeding treats to boost stats and familiarity in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

Familiars in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch have signs that grant bonuses against specific elemental attacks and status ailments. The Sun - Moon - Star triangle is crucial: Sun beats Moon, Moon beats Star, and Star beats Sun. When a familiar's sign beats an enemy's sign, it deals +20% damage. Conversely, if a sign loses, it deals -20% damage to that enemy.

The Planet and Double Planet signs are exceptions. A Planet sign is neutral to the regular signs but deals +50% damage to Double Planet signs. A Double Planet sign deals +10% damage to all regular signs and does not deal additional damage to Planet signs.

Familiar Sign Effects:

  • Sun: +5% Fire resistance and Sleep ailment
  • Double Sun: +10% Fire resistance and Sleep ailment
  • Moon: +5% Water resistance and Confusion ailment
  • Double Moon: +10% Water resistance and Confusion ailment

Each party member can have three active familiars and three reserves. Active familiars receive full battle experience, making it wise to level up multiple familiars.

You can feed familiars treats to boost their primary ability and familiarity. A familiar can eat 10 treats at a time, and stomach slots are emptied by battling. Each battle fought empties one slot per familiar.

A familiar's six stats can be boosted by a combined maximum of 50 points. You can boost stats by 10 points for each fully filled familiarity heart. There are five familiarity hearts, allowing for a maximum stat boost of 50. Filling hearts is also achieved by feeding treats.

Different treat types exist, with stronger versions offering double the boost. Each familiar has a favorite treat, which doubles the familiarity bonus. Pink hearts above a familiar's head indicate it likes a treat.

After Esther joins and you complete the Temple of Trials, you can catch familiars. Attack monsters until there's a 4-25% chance pink hearts appear above them, indicating they've fallen in love. Stop attacking and have Esther use Serenade to catch them.
