Learn how to defeat Jasmine in Pokémon Crystal and earn the Mineral Badge! Get tips on her Steelix and Magnemite, plus find out where to get key items like HM02 Fly.

Alright, you've made it to Olivine City and it's time to take on Jasmine for the Mineral Badge! This can be a bit of a challenge, especially with her powerful Steelix, but don't worry, I'll walk you through it. Before we head to the gym, let's make sure you're prepared.

First things first, after you beat Chuck in Cianwood City, a woman outside the gym gives you HM02 (Fly). Make sure you grab that! It'll save you tons of time later. Once you've healed up at the Pokémon Center in Cianwood, use Fly to head straight to Olivine City.

Now, before you challenge Jasmine, there are a couple of really useful items you can pick up using Strength and Fly. If you haven't already, head back to the Slowpoke Well in Cianwood City. Go all the way to the end where you fought those Team Rocket Grunts. Use Strength to push the boulder, then Surf across the water. On a ledge to the west, you can get a King's Rock, which can make your Pokémon flinch opponents and even evolves Slowpoke and Poliwhirl into Slowking and Politoed when traded. To the east, you can find TM18 (Rain Dance). Also, remember the Burned Tower? Fall down the northeastern hole on the first floor, push the Strength boulder, and you'll find TM20 (Endure). These items can really help out!

With those items in hand, head back to Olivine City. Make your way to the Glitter Lighthouse in the southeast part of town. Remember how to get to the top? If not, the map should help. Once you reach Jasmine, give her the Secret Potion you got in Cianwood to heal her Ampharos. After that, she'll head back to the Gym.

The Olivine City Gym is in the northern part of town. There aren't any trainers or puzzles inside, so just head straight north to challenge Jasmine!

Leader Jasmine - Pokémon Battle Strategy

Jasmine's team consists of two Lv. 30 Magnemite and a Lv. 35 Steelix. You'll earn $3500, the Mineral Badge, and TM23 (Iron Tail) for winning.

Vs. Magnemite (Lv. 30 x2):

  • These guys are Steel/Electric types. Their main threat is Thunderbolt, but Ground-type Pokémon are completely immune to it and deal quadruple damage! If you don't have a Ground type, Fire or Fighting types work well too.
  • Watch out for Supersonic (confuses) and Sonicboom (fixed damage), but they shouldn't be too much of an issue at this point. Thunder Wave can also be annoying if it paralyzes your Pokémon.

Vs. Steelix (Lv. 35):

  • This is the real challenge! Steelix is a Steel/Ground type.
  • Strategy: Water and Fire-type Pokémon are your best bet here. Steelix has incredibly high Defense, so physical attacks won't do much. Special attacks, especially Water and Fire moves, will be much more effective.
  • Jasmine's Steelix knows Sunny Day, which powers up Fire moves but weakens Water moves. This actually works in your favor if you're using Fire types!
  • Watch out for Iron Tail, which hits hard, but Steelix's Attack stat isn't as high as its Defense.
  • If you're struggling, consider using Pokémon with Ground moves against the Magnemite to get a quick advantage before facing Steelix.

Once you defeat Jasmine, you'll earn the Mineral Badge, which allows Pokémon up to Level 50 (even those you received in trades) to obey you. You'll also get TM23 (Iron Tail), a powerful Steel-type move.
