Master the controls and understand the stat system in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Learn about attacks, blocking, special moves, leveling up, and more.

This section covers the basic controls and the stat-building system in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.

Controls:

  • Left Control Stick: Quick-tap or double-tap to perform a dash. Hold up or down while tapping to hop to the side.
  • Square Button: Fast attack. Repeatedly tapping leads to a flurry of combo hits and a knockdown attack. Can be used to pick up and use weapons or enemy bodies. Holding the button taunts, which has no effect in single-player but may be useful in multiplayer.
  • Triangle Button: Strong attack. More easily blocked but often stuns enemies. Repeatedly tapping results in a shorter combo ending in a knockdown. Used to throw weapons; high Strength can cause thrown weapons to return and hit the player.
  • X Button: Jump. At level 1, allows for jumping attacks with the Square button. In shops, used to interact with shopkeepers and buy goods.
  • Circle Button: Block. Useful in specific situations and cancels out of menus.
  • R1 Button: Super attack. Knocks down enemies on both sides at the cost of Willpower or HP.
  • L1 Button: Call Striker. Initially calls Knives Chau. Other Strikers can be obtained later.
  • Start Button: Opens the main menu and pauses the game during combat.

Game Basics & Stats:

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game features stat-building similar to games like Final Fight and River City Ransom. Each playable character starts at level 1 with no experience or money. Stats, experience, and money do not carry over between characters.

Lives: You start with three lives, effectively having four total chances before reaching the 'Continue?' screen. The game saves your current number of lives, HP, and Willpower. Continuing a stage does not reset your progress in terms of money, experience, or stats gained.

Stats Explained:

  • Level: Max level is 16. Leveling up unlocks new moves; you gain one new move per level. Some unique moves are obtained through other means.
  • XP (Experience Points): Gained by hitting and defeating enemies. Leveling up refills HP and Willpower to maximum. Grinding for XP is recommended, especially on higher difficulties, as you will likely reach level 16 before completing the game. Gaining XP beyond level 16 offers no benefit other than bragging rights.
  • Money: Earned through air-juggling enemies, certain events, and primarily by defeating enemies. Money is crucial for buying items from shops to restore HP and Willpower. Purchasing items also increases your main stats, which start at zero and remain so if no items are bought.
