Sonic Advance 3 boss guide covering Sunset Hill, Ocean Base, and Toy Kingdom. Learn strategies and unlockable characters.
Zone 2 Act 3: Sunset Hill Miniboss
This is G-mel again. He can rush at you or jump into the air and spin rapidly. To avoid the spinning attack, jump up quickly. You will want to defeat this act and miniboss with Sonic as leader because if you do, you will unlock Knuckles the Echidna. It takes 4 hits to defeat.
Zone 2: Sunset Hill Boss
This boss is a wheel that rolls around in an oval on the floor and ceiling. There is a switch in the middle you can press to make a platform temporarily appear. Hit the glass part of the wheel where Eggman and G-mel are; hitting other parts will only hurt you. The wheel goes faster and is on the ceiling more as you hit it. Tails' (a character) flight is very handy for hitting it with his tails, so Tails/Sonic is recommended for the first playthrough. Other character combinations to try include Tails/Amy or Cream/Knuckles. With Cream/Knuckles, you can jump toward the wheel and Cheese (Cream's Chao) will likely hit the glass part. It takes 8 hits to defeat.
Zone 3: Ocean Base Boss
This boss has springy legs and moves up high before coming down hard. Keep up with him in the air so when he comes down, you are between his feet (which hurt if touched) and then jump up to hit him. After 4 hits, instead of coming down normally, his feet may curve inward before he descends, and a shockwave comes off on either side when he lands. To avoid this, when you see the feet curve in, quickly spin-dash (a move where Sonic curls into a ball and spins) or use Amy's (a character) Giant Step or Dash toward the edge of the screen, then jump up quickly to avoid the shockwave. Flight, gliding, or Tag Action (a special move where characters combine abilities) do not help. Chao Attack (a move involving a Chao) works but doesn't help much. Sonic/Tails is suggested. Amy's Giant Steps and Dash are better for avoiding the shockwave than Spin-dash because it's easier to jump after hitting the edge of the screen. Use Mid-air Hammer Attack (Amy's aerial attack) to hit the boss. It takes 8 hits to defeat.
Zone 4 Act 3: Toy Kingdom Miniboss
G-mel has three moves: the two from the Zone 2 miniboss, plus a new move where he stands still and fires missiles. These missiles are easy to avoid by running away and jumping. You will want to defeat this act and miniboss with Sonic as leader because if you do, you will unlock Amy Rose. Later, you might want to use Knuckles/Tails to get the Gold Medal. It takes 4 hits to defeat.
Zone 4: Toy Kingdom Boss
This boss is a jack-in-the-box-like contraption in a flat field with dangerous holes on the left and right sides. The goal is to push the box into the hole on the right side of the screen, while Eggman's attacks try to push you into the left hole. When Eggman is visible, the box creeps slowly left; hitting him sends it right. Be prepared for unpredictable attacks and occasional soldiers. If G-mel pops out with confetti (no attack), Eggman will reappear, and you can hit him again. One attack involves G-mel appearing in a mace ball heading straight for you, then retracting. To avoid this, jump over it toward the box, then jump back when the mace retracts slightly. Flying can help. Later, the mace may not reach the hole, allowing you to stand near the hole and avoid it while watching for soldiers. Another attack is a rocket attack where G-mel rockets high up, an arrow appears over your head, and then he tries to hit you. Rev up a spin-dash and release it as soon as the arrow disappears, moving toward the box, not the hole. This becomes harder with more frequent soldiers. Knuckles as a partner can be good to throw at the boss. Flight helps avoid the mace. If you unlocked Cream, Chao Attack works well. Skid attack and hammers are safer than spin jumping when hitting Eggman sideways. It takes 8 hits to defeat.
