This section of the guide covers the fundamental mechanics of Sonic Heroes, essential for progressing through the game. Understanding these elements will help you execute attacks easier and survive the challenges ahead.

Levels: Your current level is indicated by three holes near your character icon. To gain levels, collect color orbs dropped by enemies or found in item boxes. Levels increase your attack power and allow you to damage certain enemies. You lose all your levels upon death or when changing levels.

Rings: Rings are your primary defense and a key resource. They fill your Team Blast gauge, protect you from one hit of damage, and grant an extra life for every 100 collected consecutively. When hit by an enemy, you lose all your rings, but they scatter and can be re-collected. Only the team leader can be damaged; team members hit do not lose rings. You lose all rings upon death, getting hit by an enemy, or switching levels. Team members can also pick up rings.
