Learn about Mordor Army units like Haradrim Lancers, Soldiers of Rhun, Mumakils, Mountain Trolls, and Grond in The Lord of the Rings Online.
Haradrim Lancers
Haradrim Lancers are robust projectile units, classified as archers, that throw spears. They have decent range and can eliminate basic infantries before they get close, making them effective when produced in large quantities. Cavalry units take heavy damage when trampling them, so they can serve as meat shields in front of orc archer battalions, though Soldiers of Rhun are better suited for this role.
Soldiers of Rhun
The Mordor Army's equivalent to pikemen, Soldiers of Rhun are highly efficient cavalry killers. Their porcupine formations are deadly, and they can be mistaken for Haradrim Lancers due to their similar appearance. Charging them in error can result in the loss of entire cavalry battle groups. Pay close attention to distinguish them from Haradrim Lancers to avoid costly mistakes. Fire arrows deal no damage to Soldiers of Rhun, but normal arrows do minimal damage (around 25%). They can be used to draw fire arrow attacks while other units engage archers without taking significant damage.
Mumakils
Mumakils are enormous elephant-type units. They are very strong against buildings and Rohan riders but highly susceptible to fire arrows. If attacked by fire arrows before dying, Mumakils can enter panic attacks, trampling any units in their vicinity. When a Mumakil perishes, units mounted on it and any units underneath it are crushed and killed. Avoid positioning infantries directly under Mumakils. Their charge attack is devastating against horse units, and groups of Mumakils can quickly destroy buildings. Mounting Haradrim Lancers or orc archers on a Mumakil provides them with protection and allows them to rank up differently than the Mumakil itself. The charge attack requires the Mumakil to be in a relatively straight line with the target; obstacles can prevent the attack from initiating, which may be a game bug. When a Mumakil has 25% health remaining, dismount any units on it to allow them time to escape before it falls.
Mountain Troll
Mountain Trolls are effective against buildings, cavalry, and basic infantry units but struggle against heroes, fire arrows, and pikemen. Fire arrows kill trolls rapidly, and pikemen deal double damage to them. Heroes possess power attacks that can overwhelm trolls. Trolls are also effective against siege units, as they can move under projectiles. Trolls can pick up rocks and trees to enhance their attacks, though this may make them more vulnerable. Trolls can regain health by eating orcs. Trolls that pick up trees permanently hold the tree, losing their ability to eat orcs and pick up rocks, and deal less damage against buildings and non-infantry units. Veteran Mountain Trolls become Attack Trolls, which are tougher and gain significant damage, armor, and health bonuses as they rank up.
Drummer Troll
Drummer Trolls provide a 300% leadership bonus to all Mordor units. They can attack with their drumsticks, but doing so causes them to lose balance and stop emitting the leadership bonus. It is best to keep them focused on providing the bonus while other units engage the enemy.
Catapult
Catapults are the primary siege units for the Mordor Army, firing fire-based rocks to destroy defensive structures like guard towers and trebuchets. They can also launch skulls to cause enemy units to flee. Catapults are vulnerable to all other unit types, so their positioning must be carefully monitored. Catapults do not rank up.
Battering Ram
The Battering Ram is a siege device similar to the Isengard version.
Siege Tower
Siege Towers are pushed by trolls and are more durable than Isengard siege ladders.
Grond
Grond is an ultimate battering ram available only at Minas Tirith in the single-player campaigns. It possesses immense health and deals massive damage to buildings and gates but cannot attack ground units. Orcs should escort Grond during movement and attacks, providing distractions while Grond assaults enemy structures.
Evil Side Campaign Missions
Tip: As with the Good Campaign, remember to save the game at critical moments during missions. The evil side is generally more challenging than the good side.
