Alright, let's talk about the Hammer Spirits. These guys are the undead versions of those Hammerite spellcasters you've probably already run into. You'll first encounter them in Mission Six, The Haunted Cathedral. They look just like the Hammerite Priests, but they're all transparent and spooky.
Their main attack is hurling ghostly skulls at you, and sometimes they can throw up to three at once. If you can get the drop on them – meaning you can sneak up behind one without them seeing you – the absolute best way to take them down is with a quick downswing from your sword. After that initial hit, a single sidestroke should do the trick and make them poof into smoke.
However, if you can't catch them off guard, they can be a real pain to kill. I've personally hit one with three downswings and it still took a couple more sidestrokes to finally get rid of it. In the thick of melee combat, just constantly slashing side-to-side seems to keep them from casting their spells on you, which is a lifesaver.
Don't forget your inventory! Flash Bombs and Explosive Mines can also be useful. Now, I haven't personally tested Flash Bombs against them, but I have seen a Hammer Spirit survive TWO Mine explosions, so don't rely on mines too heavily. If you're using Fire Arrows, expect to use at least three to bring one down. I haven't managed to kill one with Holy Water Arrows yet, but they can definitely take at least two shots from those. One interesting thing to note is that they don't seem to be very accurate with their skull throws when you're not right up in their faces.
