Kazuma Kiryu - The protagonist of the Yakuza series, known as the "Dragon of Dojima." He was an officer in the Tojo Clan in Yakuza 1, accepting responsibility for his boss Sohei Dojima's murder, leading to ten years in prison. Upon release, he uncovered a conspiracy involving Haruka and ten billion yen, resulting in his brief tenure as the Fourth Chairman of the Tojo Clan. He has been repeatedly drawn back into Tojo Clan affairs despite attempts at a quiet life, including running an orphanage in Okinawa and working as a taxi driver in Fukuoka. Now 48 years old, he is leaving a three-year prison term, hoping for a quiet civilian life.

Haruka Sawamura - Kiryu's adopted daughter, now 20 years old. She is the biological daughter of Yumi Sawamura. Kiryu found her at age nine hiding with a pistol in a bar, holding a clue to the missing ten billion yen. He eventually adopted her. While not directly involved with the yakuza or a fighter, she has faced danger, including kidnappings. She helped establish Morning Glory Orphanage in Okinawa. In Yakuza 5, she was scouted by a talent agency to become an idol, with the condition of forsaking ties to her criminal caregiver. At the end of Yakuza 5, she rejected the idol life, leading to the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

Makoto Date - A detective with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He first met Kiryu in the first Yakuza game and they assisted each other. Date serves as Kiryu's link to the police and civilian life. He left the force in Yakuza 3 but returned in Yakuza 5 to help Kiryu.

Daigo Dojima - The Sixth and current Chairman of the Tojo Clan, and the son of Sohei Dojima. In Yakuza 2, Kiryu brought Daigo into leadership from a life of decadence. Daigo has strived to maintain the Clan, often requiring Kiryu's assistance.

Goro Majima - The one-eyed yakuza known as the "Mad Dog of Shimano," Majima is a rival and occasional ally to Kiryu. He is currently the patriarch of the Majima Family. Despite his flamboyant and unhinged appearance, Majima is a shrewd leader. He often works to Kiryu's benefit to help resolve Tojo Clan issues, even while seeking opportunities to fight Kiryu.

Shun Akiyama - Introduced in Yakuza 4, Akiyama is a moneylender and owner of Sky Finance, known as the "Lifeline of Kamurocho." He supports worthy businesses with collateral-free loans, managing to stay in business. Though generally affable and laid-back, he desires to maintain peace in Kamurocho and closely monitors underworld dealings, despite not being a yakuza himself.
