At the heart of Aion's lore lies the cataclysmic event known as the Epic Cataclysm. Originally, Atreia was a unified world, protected by the Tower of Eternity. However, a devastating war between the Aion and the Balaur led to the Tower's destruction, splitting Atreia into two distinct halves and creating the Abyss, a volatile rift between them. This event gave birth to the two primary factions you can choose to join:

• Elyos: Residing on the sun-drenched, fertile southern half of Atreia, the Elyos are blessed with radiant beauty and a strong sense of justice. They believe themselves to be the true inheritors of Atreia and are dedicated to restoring the world to its former glory. Their starting zone is typically Poeta for new characters.
• Asmodians: Dwelling in the dark, frozen northern half of Atreia, the Asmodians have adapted to their harsh environment, developing sharp claws, glowing red eyes, and a fierce, pragmatic nature. They view the Elyos as soft and misguided, believing their own resilience makes them the rightful guardians of Atreia. Their starting zone is typically Ishalgen for new characters.

The constant struggle between these two factions for control over the remaining resources and the fragmented Tower of Eternity forms the core of Aion's PvPvE experience.

The Aion and the Balaur

Before the Cataclysm, the world was overseen by the powerful deity known as Aion, who created the Tower of Eternity as a source of immense power and protection. The Balaur, a race of formidable dragon-like beings, were initially created by Aion to govern the world. However, their insatiable lust for power led them to rebel against Aion and attempt to seize control of the Tower, directly causing the Epic Cataclysm.

• Balaur Incursions: Even after the Cataclysm, the Balaur remain a significant threat. They frequently launch incursions into both Elysean and Asmodian territories, particularly in the Abyss and later zones like Inggison (Elyos) and Gelkmaros (Asmodian).
• Strategic Importance: Defeating Balaur forces is often tied to important quests and rewards, including unique Balaur Scales and Ancient Relics that can be exchanged for powerful gear.

Key Locations and Their Significance

As you progress through Aion, you'll encounter numerous regions, each with its own history and strategic importance. Understanding these locations will enhance your gameplay and questing experience.

Starting Zones (Levels 1-10)

• Poeta (Elyos): A lush, verdant region where new Elyos Daevas begin their journey. Key questlines here introduce you to the Elyos' plight and the ongoing threat of the Mau. Look for the Kaisinel Academy for early training and quests from Centurion Mavin.
• Ishalgen (Asmodian): A desolate, ice-covered land where new Asmodian Daevas awaken. This zone emphasizes survival and the harsh realities of Asmodian life. Seek out Centurion Morheim for your initial assignments and to learn about the Krall threat.

The Abyss (Levels 25+)

The Abyss is the shattered core of Atreia, a floating battleground where the Elyos and Asmodians constantly clash for control of fortresses and artifacts. It is the primary hub for PvP and features unique resources.

• Fortress Sieges: Participate in large-scale PvP battles for control of fortresses like Siel's Western Fortress and Siel's Eastern Fortress. Controlling these grants your faction access to unique vendors, buffs, and Abyss Points.
• Artifacts: Capture and activate powerful Abyss Artifacts to gain temporary buffs for your faction or unleash devastating attacks on enemy forces.
• Abyss Points: Earned through PvP kills, quest completion, and fortress sieges, Abyss Points are a crucial currency for purchasing high-tier Abyss Gear from special vendors in your faction's main Abyss outpost (e.g., Teminon Landing for Elyos, Primum Fortress for Asmodians).

Later Zones (Levels 30+)

• Eltnen (Elyos) & Morheim (Asmodian): These mid-level zones expand upon the faction conflict and introduce more complex questlines involving various monster races and Balaur remnants. Explore Eltnen Fortress and Morheim Fortress for daily quests and access to important flight paths.
• Heiron (Elyos) & Beluslan (Asmodian): Higher-level zones that delve deeper into the lore of the Daevas and the ongoing struggle against the Balaur. These zones often feature challenging elite monsters and instances.

Character Creation and Faction Choice

Your choice of faction during character creation is permanent and dictates your starting zone, appearance, and the side you will fight for throughout your Aion journey. Consider the aesthetic and lore of each faction before making your decision:

• Elyos: If you prefer a brighter, more traditionally heroic aesthetic and a focus on restoring a lost paradise, the Elyos are for you.
