Learn how to interact with forest creatures in Gris! This guide covers finding stars, collecting Mementos, and understanding the Five Stages of Grief to help you progress.
Hey there! So, you've just started your journey as Gris in this beautiful, broken world. After a rough landing, you'll find yourself collapsed on the ground. Don't worry, it's all part of the experience. To get moving, just point the left joystick to the right. As Gris walks forward, the world will start to reveal itself.
You'll eventually collapse again after passing through some fog. When you get up this time, Gris will be a bit quicker and, more importantly, she'll gain the ability to jump! It's like she's suddenly as light as a bird.
Five Stages of Grief: Denial
Now, here's a cool little secret: after you get the jump ability, you can actually backtrack a bit to the left. Near where Gris first landed, there's a small pillar. Just beyond it, you'll see a collapsed statue. When you get close to it, let Gris fall and then get up on her own. Super important: don't touch the controller at all during this. If you do it right, you'll get a notification on the screen saying you've completed the 'First Stage of Grief: Denial'. Keep an eye out for these subtle challenges throughout the game; there are five stages in total!
Constellation Bridges
As you keep moving forward, the environment will get rockier. You'll eventually climb a huge rock, and once you leap over the edge, there's no going back. You'll soon come across a small, pulsing light – a Star. Approach it, and Gris will absorb it, gaining a little companion.
Keep going past where you found the first Star. Look for some crumbling platforms, the first one marked by a tree with upside-down triangular leaves. Hop on these and make your way left until you see a black mountain rising to your right. Not long after you start climbing it, you'll find a second Star. After grabbing that, you'll discover what these little companions are for just a bit further ahead. The game will highlight a large gap between structures, showing that these pulsing lights can create a bridge.
You don't have enough lights to cross this gap yet, but luckily, there's a third one nearby. Climb the stairs to your left and head towards a large, leaning tower. You can ascend this tower using the zigzagging stairs. At the very top, your two little lights will automatically form a bridge, allowing you to reach a third Star on a smaller tower nearby.
Memento #1
Before you head back to the gap, there's a collectible you won't want to miss. Go up the first set of stairs on the leaning tower, then jump over to the left. You'll see a symbol here – it's one of the game's Mementos. Just pass over it to activate it, and then you can head back.
There are several Mementos to find in each chapter. This first chapter only has two, and you'll find the second one later on. For now, just collecting this first one is great!
Return to the gap, and your three little companions will form a bridge for you. Cross it and continue to the right until you reach a crumbling stone hand. A short cutscene will play, marked by a burst of red. You'll also get a notification confirming you've completed a challenge: Red - A Color Has Been Brought Back. You can check your 'Challenges' anytime from the Pause Menu. Many challenges have special requirements, but these 'color' ones are awarded as you finish each chapter.
The Temple and the Constellations
Keep going until you reach a massive staircase leading up to what looks like a temple. Right at the top, on the back wall, there's a pictogram showing a leaning tower and two circular symbols with a dot in the middle. If you activated that Memento earlier, one of those symbols should light up. You'll find the other one later.
For now, just head forward. When you reach a blood-red tree, your little star companions will leave you to form a constellation in the sky. You'll have to go on without them for a bit. On the other side of the red tree, at the edge of the stairs leading down, you'll see more symbols on black wall sections. These represent the game's chapters and have their own Mementos to collect as you progress.
Head down the stairs and keep going right until you start sliding down a steep, red mountainside. Once you're back on flat ground, continue right. You'll arrive at a black tower. As you get near the top, Gris will automatically finish the climb, and a short cutscene will play. And that's it – the game's prologue is complete!
