Controls — Gris Guide
Learn how to move, jump, and interact with the world in Gris. This guide covers the Prologue, including collecting stars and finding Mementos.
Alright, let's get you started in the beautiful world of Gris! You'll begin as a young girl named Gris, who's found herself in a world that's literally falling apart. After a rough landing, your first task is simple: just move forward. As you explore, Gris will gain new abilities, and the world will start to come back to life around her. It's a journey of discovery, and you'll be right there with her.
To get Gris moving, just push the left joystick to the right. As she walks, you'll notice the world around her slowly taking shape. Keep going, and she'll eventually collapse again after passing through a misty cloud. When she gets up this time, she'll be a bit quicker and, more importantly, she'll gain the ability to jump! She's as light as a bird now, so get ready to explore.
Five Stages of Grief: Denial
Now, here's a neat little secret for you. After you get the jump ability, try heading back to the left for a moment. You'll see a small pillar and, nearby, a collapsed statue. Walk Gris up to the statue, let her fall, and then let her get up on her own. Crucially, don't touch the controller at all during this part. If you do it right, you'll see a notification pop up on the screen: First Stage of Grief: Denial. Keep an eye out for these special challenges throughout the game; they're tied to Gris's emotional journey.
Constellation Bridges
As you continue your journey forward, the environment will become more rocky. You'll eventually climb a large rock formation. When you leap over the edge, there's no going back the way you came.
Keep moving until you spot a small, pulsing light – a Star. When Gris approaches it, she'll absorb it, and it will become a little companion. You'll need these companions later!
After collecting the first Star, look for some crumbling platforms. The first one is marked by a tree with upside-down triangular leaves. Jump across these platforms, heading left, until you see a black mountain rising to your right. Climb this mountain, and shortly after you start, you'll find a second Star.
Now, you'll soon discover why these Stars are so important. You'll come to a large gap that you can't cross yet. Don't worry, there's a third Star nearby! Head up the stairs to your left, and you'll find a large, leaning tower. Climb the zigzagging stairs to the top. Once you're up there, your two little Star companions will automatically create a bridge, allowing you to reach a third Star on a smaller tower nearby.
Memento #1
Before you head back to cross the gap, there's a collectible you won't want to miss. Go up the first staircase on the leaning tower, then jump to the left. You'll see a symbol on the ground – this is one of the game's Mementos. Step on it to activate it.
There are Mementos scattered throughout each chapter. The first chapter has two, but you'll only be able to grab one right now. Once you've got it, return to the gap. Your three Star companions will form a bridge for you. Cross it and continue to the right until you reach a crumbling stone hand. A short cutscene will play, accompanied by a burst of red, and you'll get a notification: Red - A Color Has Been Brought Back. You can check your progress on these challenges in the Pause Menu.
The Temple and the Constellations
Keep moving forward until you reach a grand staircase leading up to what looks like a temple. At the very top, on the back wall, you'll see a pictogram showing a leaning tower and two circles with a dot. If you found the Memento earlier, one of those symbols should now be lit up. You'll find the other one later on.
Continue inside. As you approach a blood-red tree, your Star companions will leave you to form a constellation in the sky. You'll have to go on without them for now.
On the other side of the red tree, at the edge of the stairs leading down, you'll see more symbols on black walls. These represent the game's chapters and their own Mementos. Keep going down the stairs and head right until you start sliding down a steep, red mountainside. Once you land on flat ground, keep moving right until you reach a black tower. As you near the top, Gris will automatically complete the climb, and a cutscene will play. This marks the end of the game's prologue!

Follow our Gris walkthrough for the Prologue chapter. Learn how to navigate the crumbling world, collect Stars and Mementos, and unlock the 'Red' challenge.
Our story begins with Gris, a young girl lost in her own crumbling world. After the opening cutscene, Gris is collapsed on the ground following a long fall. Right now, the only thing you can do is move forward, but as Gris grows, she will be able to engage more with the world around her.
Gris will stand up and walk when you point the left joystick to the right. Have her move forward. The further she goes, the more the world around her will begin to take shape.
Eventually, Gris will collapse on the ground again after passing through a cloud of fog. But this time when you get up, she will be able to move a little more quickly. What's more, she now gains the ability to jump, as light and agile as a bird.
Five Stages of Grief: Denial
After gaining the ability to jump, you may want to backtrack to the left for a moment. There is a small pillar close to the location where Gris first landed. Beyond that, you can observe a collapsed statue. As you near the statue, let Gris fall and then get up herself. It is very important here that you do not touch your controller; if you do you will not complete this stage of grief. If you perform it correctly, you should see a pop-up on the right corner of your screen indicating you have completed the challenge - First Stage of Grief: Denial.
There are five stages of grief which Gris can go through in this game. You must complete specific requirements to meet them, so keep your eyes peeled for these subtle opportunities.
Constellation Bridges
As you continue to move forward, the world will grow rocky. Finally you will ascend a giant rock. As you leap over the edge, there will be no turning back in the other direction.
Continue on until you reach a small pulsing light, or a Star. Approach the light, and Gris will seem to absorb it, and it will now become a companion for her.
Further past where you collected the star, look for some crumbling platforms (the first marked by a tree with triangular upside down leaves). Jump on top of them, and continue platforming to the left until you see a black mountain ascending to the right.
Shortly after beginning to climb the black mountain, you'll be able to collect a second Star. After collecting it, you will discover the use for Gris's newfound companions just a little further. The game will briefly focus on a large gap between the structures, hinting that the pulsing lights can be used to aid your crossing.
However, you do not currently have enough lights to bridge this gap. Luckily, there is a third nearby. Climb the stairs on the left and proceed to discover a large leaning tower. There are stairs zigzagging their way up which you can use to climb to the top of the tower. Once there, your two little lights will automatically create a bridge which Gris can use to collect a third Star from the smaller tower nearby.
Memento #1
Before returning to the right, there's once more collectible in this area. Mount the first staircase on the leaning tower, and then jump over to the left. You'll see a symbol here, which is one of the game's Mementos. Pass over this to activate it and then proceed.
There are several Mementos to collect in each chapter. The first chapter only has two, but the second one can only be obtained later. For now, you'll have to content yourself with collecting this first one.
Return to the gap, and your three little companions will automatically form a bridge for you. Cross it, and continue to the right until you reach a crumbling stone hand. A brief cutscene will occur, accompanied by a burst of red. You'll also receive a notification pop up in the top right corner of the screen informing you that one of your challenges has been completed: Red - A Color Has Been Brought Back.
You can check your "Challenges" from the Pause Menu. There are many challenges throughout the game, some of which require you to meet special requirements. However, the "color" ones are awarded upon completion of each chapter.
The Temple and the Constellations
Continue on until you reach a giant staircase leading up to a temple of sorts. Just at the top of the stairs, you will notice a pictogram on the back wall depicting a leaning tower and two circular symbols punctuated by a dot in the center. If you activated the Memento from before, one should be lit up. You'll obtain the other one later.
For now, continue forward. As you reach a blood red tree, your little star companions will flow from you to form a constellation in the sky. You must go on without them now.
On the other side of the red tree, at the edge of the stairs leading downward, you will notice more symbols on black sections of walls. These represent the game's chapters which have their own Mementos to collect, which you will find as you progress.
Continue down the stairs and head right until you find yourself sliding down a steep red mountain side. Once you find yourself on flat ground again, continue right. You will arrive at a black tower. As you near the top, Gris will automatically finish the climb, and a brief cutscene will occur. This marks the completion of the game's prologue.
