Strider Battle Strategy

Learn effective strategies and tactics to overcome the formidable Striders in Half-Life 2: Episode Two. This guide provides tips on combat, weapon usage, and environmental advantages.

Stats / Weaknesses:

• Armor: Extremely high, making conventional weapons ineffective.
• Weak Points: The glowing orange nodes on their legs and head are vulnerable. Destroying these can cripple or kill them.
• Movement: Slow and deliberate, but their long legs allow them to traverse difficult terrain and step over obstacles.
• Primary Weapon: A powerful energy cannon capable of devastating damage.
• Secondary Weapon: A smaller, rapid-fire projectile weapon.

Phases:

1. Initial Engagement: Striders will typically advance slowly, firing their main cannon. Use cover immediately.
2. Targeting Weak Points: As the Strider closes in or exposes its weak points, focus fire on the orange nodes. The Gravity Gun's supercharged mode can be effective if charged with nearby objects.
3. Crippling Legs: Destroying the leg nodes can cause the Strider to collapse, making it a stationary target and easier to finish off.
4. Headshot: A direct hit to the head node can also be lethal, but is a harder target to achieve.
5. Retreat/Reposition: If overwhelmed, use the environment to break line of sight and reposition. Striders are not agile and cannot easily pursue into tight spaces.

Strategy:

• Gravity Gun: The supercharged Gravity Gun is one of the most effective tools. Pick up heavy objects (like radiators or explosive barrels) and launch them at the Strider's weak points.
• Rocket Launcher: Direct hits from the Rocket Launcher can deal significant damage, especially to the weak points. Aim carefully.
• Explosives: Grenades and explosive barrels can be used to damage Striders, particularly if detonated near their legs.
• Environment: Utilize cover such as buildings, vehicles, and debris to avoid their main cannon fire. Lure them into areas where their large size makes them an easier target or where they might get stuck.
• Combine Advisors: In some encounters, Combine Advisors may be present. These are a high priority target as they can heal Striders and are dangerous on their own.
• Squad Tactics: If fighting alongside Resistance members, coordinate fire and draw the Strider's attention while others target its weak points.
