Learn about all Ammunition types and Coatings in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, including crafting recipes and item locations.

Ammunition Types:

Ammunition primarily functions with the Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun (a type of firearm). Specific circumstances may alter this. Crafting materials are listed with each Ammunition type.

  • Normal Ammunition
  • Spread Ammunition

Spread Ammunition fires multiple shell shots, similar to a shotgun. It is most effective at close range.

  • Level One Spread Ammunition hits a target 3 times at point-blank range.
  • Level Two Spread Ammunition hits a target 5 times at point-blank range.
  • Spread Ammunition can be leveled up to Level Three.

Crafting Spread Ammunition:

  • Level Two Spread Ammo requires Spread Ammunition One plus Gunpowder.
  • Level Three Spread Ammo requires Gunpowder 2 and Spread Ammunition two.
  • Spread Ammo three can be crafted with Arowana Scales and similar Arowana Items.

Skills, food perks, and weapons can increase the potency of Artillery and Spread Ammunition.

The Jagras Blitz at Tier I can hold 10 rounds of Spread Ammunition and 6 Rounds of Spread Ammo #2, totaling 16 Rounds per reload. This was found effective against Jyrotodus during its first appearance in the main quest.

Coatings:

Coatings are used for the Bow and Arrow (a type of bow) weapon. You can equip a Coating by pressing the Triangle button (on PS4) while the Bow is drawn. Understanding enemy weaknesses and compatible Coatings is crucial before battle. Always prepare by taking the proper crafting items and coatings in your Item Pouch (a storage inventory).

  • Close Range Coating

Close Range Coating is primary for most Bow and Arrow weapons. It significantly increases damage at close range. This coating has an infinite number of uses on any bow and arrow weapon that can use it. It is only effective at close range.

  • Poison Coating

Poison Coating can be found as Poison Coating + on certain bow and arrow weapons, such as the Blooming Arch derived from the Pukei-Pukei tree. Poison Coating generally allows for 20/20 shots in your item pouch at a time. Arc Shot is not recommended for Poison Coated shots; Charged R2 attacks aimed at weak-points are more effective, especially against enemies weak to poison like Tobi-Kadachi.

Toadstool mushrooms can be held in your Item Pouch or farmed in the Ancient Forest. Carrying the maximum of 10/10 Toadstool items allows you to craft an extra 30/20 Poison Coated arrows. This is useful for tougher enemies.

Toadstool mushrooms can potentially be cultivated later in the game after completing Optional Quests. Poison Coatings can also be purchased from the Provisions Stockpile Merchants located on the 1st Floor Tradeyard and the 4th Floor gathering hub. These purchased Poison Coatings cost money and are only available mid-game and beyond.

Bomberry:

This item is used to craft Cluster Bombs Ammunition I. To acquire Bomberry, head to the Northeast Campsite at the Ancient Forest. Scoutflies may indicate Bomberry and Adamant Seed locations. To reach them, jump onto one of the vines, land in the middle of the platform, and climb the Climbable Tendrils to find Bomberry and Adamant Seeds.
